Civil Service Changes.
Wellington, last night. The vaoanoies caused by Seeds and Boohworth’s retirements have been filled by promotions at much lessened salaries. Captain Fairchild will take charge of the Stella, and Captain Gray returns to the Customs Department. Mr McKeller is to be Inspector of Customs as well as Collector, at the same salary. Mr Glasgow will be Secretary of Customs at £5OO, an increase of £lOO, and Mr Wilson will be assistant Secretary at an increase of £35. The latter will continue to specially administer the Marine Department, but it is intended that he and Glasgow shall be able to relieve each other in case of absence or incapacity, the department being too large to long continue dependent on one man. Chamberlain succeeds Harkworth as Collector at Dunedin, with an increase of £5O on his present salary. A number of smaller promotions take place consequent on these changes.
