Mr Spurgeon on the Beer Room.

Speaking tt the fifth anniversary of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Blue Ribbon Totat Abstinence Sociaty, Mr Spurgeon said that he would like to hear what was the reason of these limited liability companies for the transference of distilleries, breweries, and such like. Was it a bad sign, or was it a good sign ? Was it that the gentlemen whe had made a good deal of money in them wanted to save what they had got ? He was not an old hand at understanding these mysteries. He heard that several clergymen had applyed for shares in these breweries. He wondered what Christian people did with the dividends from these companies. What did they wash the money in before they took it ? Perhaps some of these brethern were of the same mind as the negro minister who used to preach with considerable eloquence. Some one asked Sambo how he lived. He answered that he preached, and lived by speculation. “ What do you speculate in ?” “Massa, I sell chickens.” “ Well,” returned the other, “ but where do you get the chtckens from ?” “ Now, honey,” the negro onswered, “ don’t you inquire too much. The fact is, I was going to inquire myself, but a revival burst up, and I have not had time to ask the boys about it, so we have gone on selling the chickens.” Temperance advocates would probably inquire, even if the “ Sombos ” did not, where the chickens came from. If they could sometimes trouble rhe consciences of eose who would pocket the fool’s pence, they had, he thought, a right to do so.
