HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent]. _ HOKITIKA, October o. Mr and Mrs E. T. Stoop returned on Monday from a visit to Southland. Mr W. Johnstone, of Christchurch, was a visitor this week. Hokitika Fire Board has been authorised to borrow £BOOO to build a new fire station. The first shipment of British cement reached Hokitika this week. Builders are pleased with the quality of the cement.
On Tuesday morning and evening, and again on Wednesday morning, fishermen had better catches of whitebait. At the river mouth some good hauls were made, tins and halftins being recoided, while some trench fishermen did better. The fish appeared to run ahead of the northerly storm. On Wednesday morning rain came from the north-west, Nith a strong wind, and the fish apparently made for the rivers. The fish are retailing at 4s 6d per pound. The Basketball Association, at their meeting on Tuesday, nominated Mary Ryan as their queen. The Cricket Club do not intend to nominate a gueen, but will probably amalgamate with one of the other sports bodies. There are now queens nominated by th Hockey Club, Rugby Rootball Clubs, and Basketball Clubs.
