This week work was commenced on the replacing of the roof on the “lock-up” block at the old Greymouth police station indicating that it is likely to be in use for some time yet. It is not yet known when the new station will be completed. The old buildings are in a bad state and the work of renewing the roof of the lock-up was urgent. The original iron roof had almost rusted away in places and the whole roof leaked badly.

The following closing dates for oveiscas Christmas mails have been advised:— United Kingdom and Europe: Letters: air 16th December, surface 10th November, Parcels 15th October. Australia: Letters ajr 20th December surface 15 December Parcels, 10th December; North America: Letters air 19th December surface 20th November, Parcels 15 November East and Africa: Letters air 13th December, surface, 31st October. Parcel dates may vary considerably.

A reg'x’ar cargo service between Wellington and Greymouth is to be established early in the New Year, if arrangements now being made are completed. The sponsor of the service, Mr Richard R. Smith, of Wellington, is to leave shortly for Los Angeles to take possession of a motor vessel which will be engaged on the service. Mr R. J. Truman, president of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce, has been advised that the proposal has received the support’of the Minister’ of Marine, the Hon. F. Hackett, who has been instrumental in obtaining a dollar allocation for the purpose of acqu>ing a suitable vessel. The ship' will be used for general cargo-carrying between Wellington and Greymouth.

The manufacturers Association there says that unless immigration is increased, the demand for labour for Auckland industry wil not be overcome, The association’s annual report states there is a shortage of female operatives and skilled labour. Almost one-quarter of New Zealand labour is employed in the Auckland district, largely in manufacturing and ancillary services.
