SINCERE AND FRIENDLY U.S. COLOURED SOLDIERS LEAVE 1000 BABIES

LONDON, Feb. 26

British welfare workers are handling the problem of 1000 half-caste babies —illegitimate children of United States coloured soldiers. According to these welfare workers most British village girls who once became friendly with coloured American soldiers preferred the negro to the white American. The babies are living unwanted in public institutions throughout the country. Women welfare workers found that the village girls considered the negroes more courteous, considerate, and sincere than the white Americans. The white Americans’ attitude was frequently superior, condescending and insincere.

British county councils arg unanimous that the great problem of the half-cast babies must be settled immediately. Somerset members of the House of Commons will press the Under-Secretary of State (Mr Kenneth Younger) for an alteration in the emigration laws so that the babies can be adopted by coloured American families.
