County Council
The Bullei’ County Council delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Counties’ Association, at Christchurch next month, Cr F. Connew (chairman), and Cr J. H. Powell, are to proceed to Wellington with the clerk-engineer (Mr C. F. Schadick) to place important matters before the Cabinet Ministers. Mi Schadick submitted to the monthly meeting of the Council a report on the Charleston road and railway proposals, setting out the advantages of such links with the line to Cape Foulwind, which he stated included the opening up of valuable farm land and timber country, as well as providing easier access to the Charleston coalfields. Mr Schadick was complimented on his report. The deputation to Wellington was asked to press for the extension of the Westport aerodrome, which was stated to be capable of handling the large type of planes for which the new airfield at Hokitika was being constructed.
It was also stated by Cr Gourlay that pressure should be applied to make the airfield at Karamea fit for commercial use and not be classed as an emergency landing ground. He added that Mr Semple had promised a grant of £2OOO for the drainage work when he last visited Karamea, but now other work had been estimated at £5OO more.
