AUCKLAND, June 26. Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd., has let a contract for the opening of its first open-cast mine. The new mine, which will be at Rotowaro, six miles from Huntly is expected to yield at first about 200 to 350 tons a coal daily. A representative of the company said it had for some time been seeking the authority of the Minister of Mines to work the new mine outside the Waikato Coal Mines Control Regulations, and permission had been granted last week Operations would begin immediately. SICK ENGINEER LANDED FROM SHIP. P.A. AUCKLAND, June 27. The King Line freighter King David, diverted from its voyage from Melbourne to New York to land the fourth engineer, Trevor Garfield Miles, who was ill, reached Auckland this morning. Miles was transferred to the launch, and then to an ambulance, which took him to Auckland hospital. His condition is described as satisfactory. The freighter resumed its voyage immediately.
