LABOUR FEDERATION

NATIONAL COUNCIL A.ttitude to Franco Spain, grouping of workers according to industry, stabilisation and support for the Labour Government, were important matters dealt with by the meeting of the National Council of the Federation of Labour in Wellington recently.

The council resolved to recommend to affiliations that all goods to and from Franco Spain be declared black. A report was adopted favouring a policy of grouping workers according to industry instead of according to trade or craft.

Committees representative of all categories of workers’ irrespective of their ‘■trade union affiliations, were recommended on all jobs and factories as part of an educational programme for industrial unionism.

The resolution passed urging, support for the Government, said the federation secretary, Mr K. Baxter, was worded as- follows: —

“After having analysed the • programmes and policies of the New Zealand Labour Party and after having taken notice of the pronouncements of the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and the leader of the Opposition, the National Council of the Federation of Labour has arrived at the conclusion that so far as the trade union movement is concerned there is at present no logical alternative to the Labour Government.

“Conscious of its responsibility to its 200,000 trade union members and the welfare of its relations and friends, the New Zealand Federation of Labour directs the attention' of the people of the Dominion to the accomplishments of the Labour Government over the past five years' of peace and six years of war. “We believe that with the present volume of production and equitable distribution, the hope for the future of our fair land is assured under the Labour Government. Therefore we call upon our members to work, vote and encourage their relatives and friends and the people of the Dominion to work and vote for the return of the Labour Government on Wednesdajr, November 27, as a means of preserving the present degree of national security, economic develonment, progress and prosperity in the future.
