Mr R. A. Avery, of Blaketown, hasbeen appointed night-porter at the Grey River Hospital.

The death of Mrs Isabella Leach, aged 70, occurred in Hokitika yesterday following a long illness. Widow of the late Mr Issac Leach, Mrs Leach was born at Greymouth on the day of the disastrous flood of 1876. She had lived all her life at Greymouth, and was an active worker in the Holy Trinity Church. She is survived by two sons, Robert, of Winton, and Herbert, of Greymouth, and a daughter, Mrs G. G. Hay, Greymouth, also by three brothers, John, Harry, and Arthur Coburn, all of Greymouth, and six grandchildren. The funeral will take place at the Karoro Cemetery to-morrow.

Mr J. K. McAlpine, of Craigieburn, was selected last night as National Party candidate for the Selwyn electorate. He was born in Christchurch in 1906, and educated at Christ’s College. Since 1926 he has been a sheep farmer at Craigieburn. He is a member of Tawera County Council, Canterbury Progress League, Lyttelton Harbour Board (chairman from 1943 to 1945), president of the Sheffield branch of the Federated Farmers, and is a membex 1 of the Executive of the Meat and Wool section of the North Canterbury District of Federated Farmers’. Mr McAlpine is also a flying member of the Canterbury Aero Club.—Press Assn.
