NEWSPRINT SUPPLY
INCREASE INDICATED (Rec. 10.40) NEW YORK, June 30. The “New York Times” correspondent at Stockholm stated: Sweden would like to export newsprint to the United States this year, but she cannot, and it is doubtful if she will be able to do so next year. The primary reason is a lack of coal. There also is the matter of the price. United States importers want to pay only 61 dollars per short ton. Sweden has been selling to the Argentine at up to 115 dollars f.o.b. per ton, and the expectation is that, the newsprint price will rise steadily. Alternatively, stocks of chemical pulp are available and are ready for export. If however, Sweden obtains coal in sufficient quantities, her newsprint exporters will be only too Mad to deliver newsprint in almost any quantities to all buyers. According to a Washington message W.P.B. officials stated that new newsprint quotas are expected to be announced on Tuesday, July 3. ; The Associated Press said': There are strong indications that an increase ok five per cent, of newsprint will be lllowed to the newspaper publisheil;, as Canada has agreed ■ to give an Idditional ten thousand tons of newsplint monthly. The U.S. House Newsprint Committee chairman,' Mr Boren, said it was the committee’s objective #o remove all controls over the use oif newsprint as soon as an adequate supply is available.
