McDoi aid, P There was a large assembly of the public in Palmerston Street yesterday for the thanksgiving service and commemoration of the ending of hostilities in Europe. A large procession of returned servicemen, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and school children, headed by the Boys’ Band, oaraded through the street and halted at the Town Hall, where the Mayor, Mr J. M Robertson, delivered a spirited address, concluding with an appeal to the public to work hard and produce as much as possible in the future lo assist the Empire in its light against imperial Japan. Members of the Westport Ministers’ Association conducted a service of worship, the Rev. H. G. Brown leading the assemblage in the Invocation and Lord’s Prayer. Major Rawcliffe read the prayer of Confession and Thanksgiving. The Rev. A. McNeur read a scripture lesson, and the Rev. S. Come./ the prayer of Intercession. Appropriate hymns were played by the Salvation Army Band and Westport Boys’ Band, and sung by the gathering. At the conclusion of th e hymns Rev. H. G. Brown pronounced the Benediction. Masses were celebrated at St. Canice’s Church by Rev. Father Phelan during, the morning and in the evening devotions were also held at the church. There were large congregations at each of the services.
