Home Bases Commands have in five and a-half years’ war lost 18,000 bombers and 3,000 fighters in operations which have contributed so mightily to the defeat of Germany, both by destroying German war industry and by reducing the German air force to impotence. The exact figures to. April 28 are as follows: R.A.F. Bomber Command lost 7,997 aircraft, R.A.F. Fighter Command lost 2,998 aircraft, in offensive and defensive operations, R.A.F'. Coastal Command lost 454. During the same period R.A.F. Bomber Command bases in Britain destroyed 759 Axis aircraft, R.A.F. Fighter Command destroyed 6,977 in defensive and offensive operations, and R.A.F. Coastal Command destroyed 174. These figures do not include any Mediterranean, Middle East or Far Eastern operations.
