SURFING
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGIN P.A. DUNEDIN, Feb. 3 The New Zealand surf championships began this morning at St. Clair Beach in perfect, warm weather. Clubs from Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago are represented by 158 competitors. Most of to-day’s' events were heats, of which the finals will be decided tomorrow. A ceremonial march past this afternoon was followed by a Welcome from the Mayor (Mr. D. C. Cameron) and an adress by the president of the New Zealand Surf Association (Captain P. Coira). Results: Junior Rescue and Resuscitation — First heat: New Brighton. Second heat: South Brighton. Women’s Four-man Alarm—First heat: St. Clair A. Second heat; Wellington B. Senior Individual Surf Race—Dean (New Brighton) 1, Dalton (North Beach A)2. R. Smith (North Beach) 3.
