Mr. C. T. Tassell, assistant supervisor of the Greymouth Telegraph Office, is a patient in the Grey River Hospital. Miss N. Horwell has left for Christchurch, where she has joined the staff of the Presbyterian Orphanage. Dr C. R. Burns has been nominated a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, states a Press Association- telegram from Wellington. Miss L. A. Bowes has left, the clerical staff of the Railways Department at Greymouth to take up a position on tne nursing start or tne Grey River Hospital. At a meeting of the trustees of the Watkins Medal Fund., Mr,. A. M. Jamieson, of Greymouth, was appointed to succeed the late Mr. G. f. Perkins, as one of the three trustees. Mr. S. Ritchie, of Christchurch, and 'Mr. C. L. Hunter, of Auckland, have been appointed wages commissioners under the recent amendment to the Economic Stabilisation Emergency Regulations, 1942.Mr fan Coster of Christchurch has been commissioned in the Royal Marines after serving in the ranks, states a London cablegram. He was an outstanding New Zealnad journalist and was on the staff of the London “Evening Standard” before joining up, states a London cablegram. Squadron Leafier Allan Crighton R N Z.A.F., Commanding Officer ot the first New Zealand fighter squadron to be despatched to the Pacific from New Zealand, who has been reported missing, believed killed, was formerly! a pilot for Cook Strait Airways and was well known on the West Coast as a result of his association with that company. A London cablegram stated that the newly-appointed New Zealand Minister, Major C. F. Skinner although he had been in the thick ot much fighting and had escaped serous hurt, celebrated his introduction to the London black-out by falling down a step and badly twisting his ankle. He starts a talking tour at Leeds on April 7, arid later speaks in Scotland. • Pilot Officer James B. Paton R.N. Z.A.F., who has been reported slightly injured on active service, is a son of Mrs. Paton, and the late Mr. J. B. Baton, of Wellington, who formerly resided in Greymoyth. Pilot Officer Paton was in the ‘Army) for some time, but later joined the Air Force and was trained in New Zealand and later in Canada under the Empire scheme.

The death occurred at Greymouth last evening, after a lengthy illness, of Mrs. Augusta Eleanora Martens, at the age of eighty-six. Mrs. Martens was a native of Stockholm, Sweden. She came to New Zealand sixty-eight iyjoiars ago. She had resided in Marsden and Kumara, and later, for the past thirty years, in Greymouth. Her husband predeceased her over thirty years ago. The funeral will take place on Tuesday; morning. The death occurred at Auckland yesterday of Mrs. Rose Collogan, a former well-known Greymouth resident. She was born in Greymouth, her parents being the late Mr. and Mrs. H. Boyle. She. married Mr. 'James Collogan, and went with him eight years ago to live in Auckland, where he predeceased her. A daughter, Mrs. C. Ewfield, is living in Auckland. A London message states that the death has occurred of Sir Haviland Hiley, who was General Manager of the N.Z. Railways .from 1913 to 1919. He was born in England and was engaged in railway work before coming to New Zealand. After relinquishing his post in the Dominion he was engaged in an advisory capacity in England and overseas, He was a Colonel on the Headquarters Staff of the New Zealand Forces in the 1914-18 war. Rev. F. G. Reddell, who has been minister of the Greymouth Baptist Church, has left to take up an appointment at Lyall Bay, Wellington. He and Mrs. Reddell, who has left for Nelson were tendered a farewell by the church on Wednesday evening, when Mr. A. J. Gilberthorpe presided over a representative- attendance. Rev. P. Kirkham spoke on behalf of the Ministers’ Association and Mr. W. Lambert, of Christchurch, on behalf of the Canterbury Baptist Auxiliary. Mr. W. Wright, on behalf of members presented Mr. Reddell with an envelope of notes, Mrs. W. Mason handed Mrs. Reddell a wall mirror, Miss V. Rudd, on behalf of the Girls’ Bible Class, presented her with a piece of crockery, and Mr. W. Rosewall, on behalf of the Boys’ Bible Class, presented Mr. Reddell with a framed photograph of the class.
