APPRENTICES

A few weeks ago we published an editorial entitled “Our Apprentices,” wherein was set out the case for higher wages. We understand that this matter is now to be dealt with by the Government. Apprentices and parents may be interested in the following new scale of wage rates for metal trades apprentices in Australia which has just reached us:—

Patternmakers’ apprentices 2s per week extra for tools. On reaching 21 years an apprentice must be paid not less than the basic wage (nett), which varies according to the State from £4 5s to £4 12s. Tradesman’s rate: £6 10s per week of 44 hours.

s. d. First year 18 9 Second year .... 26 9 40 3 Fourth year .... 65 3 Fifth year 82 0
