Last week freight hauled through the Otira tunnel from the West Coast to Canterburv amounted to 15.321 tons, compared with 16,72 1 tons in the corresnonding week of last year, a decrease of 1,390 tons. In 1939. the corresponding total was 1 3.055 tons. The Greymouth Boxing and Wrestling Assn, has arranged for a professional wrestling contest between Fred Atkins, Australia, and Pat Meehan, Canada, to take place at the Grevmouth Town Hall on Saturday, evening. Both contestants have ap-j neared at Grevmouth this season, but have not previously been matched.

Lambing is proceeding at present with fairly good prospects in the West Coast farming areas, according to Mr. J. Fleming, Inspector of Stock. As a result" of a defect in the fan, which developed on Mondav evening, the Wallsend Mine was idle yesterday. At 6 o’clock yesterday morning the “no work’’ whistle blew at the mine, and those employees who had not been advised of the mishap and had arrived for work, were compelled to return to their homes. The repairs to the fan have been completed, and work will be resumed today. “The Mayor of Greymouth has had several tilts at x the Hospital smoke eliminator and has been saying that it is not satisfactory,” said Mr J. Smeaton at last night’s meeting of the Grev Hospital Board He moved that the Engineer be reauested to submit a report to the Board at the next meeting relative to lhe smoke nuisance, the motion being c-poonded bv the chairman (Mr J. Mulcare) and carried without discussion. At the September meeting of the Runanga Women’s Institute. Mrs Johnson' presided. Barrytown Institute held its monthly meeting at the residence of Mrs H. Langridge, with Mesdames Rowe and'Butterworth assisting as hostesses. The cooking competition was won by Mrs H. Weaver. Miss T. Wafer read the ‘‘Golden Thread” talk on “Sincerity.” The roll call was “What I Would Do to Hitler.” Miss Robins’ visit was'discussed, and it was decided that classes in dressmaking and upholstery should be formed An invitation to the birthday celebrations of the Runanga Institute was accepted. Warm garments for the Lady Galway Guild were handed in. and comforts for the soldiers were collected. The singing of the National Anthem concluded the meeting, and afternoon tea was then served. The Catholic Nurses’ Guild entermembers of the Registered Nurses’ Assn., at the Nurses’ Home, on Monday evening. Items were given by the following artists: Misses Coll, D 7 Willis. J. Walker, M. Cawley, t M. Sinnot. Staff Nurse Sanson, 'Nurses Coll. Tlorrack, Hanley, and Quinn. "A presented by the Class_D nurses. Misses Robinson arid Bell, members of the Assn., who are leaving the district, were farewelled during the evening, presentations of books being made by the Matron (Miss N. Moffatt) who referred to the service given the Association by the departing members, and wished them well jn their new districts. Supper was served, and dancing occupied the remainder of the evening.

The danger of allowing youngchildren to light fires near houses was illustrated at Greymouth yester-da-v afternoon, when the Fire Brigade was summoned at about 4 o’clock to quench a tire in Alexander Street. .A house owned by Mr P. Blanchfield, and occupied by Mr Finlay, which had been left unoccupied during the afternoon, was menaced when a lire lit by voung children playing- near the house set alight a wooden' box and other material, and crept up the_niles to burn the weather boards on the side of the house. The’ lire had a good hold when observed bv neighbours, * whose quick aetipn. in dousing the flames with I buckets of water, and summoning the Brigade, undoubtedly saved the property from more serious damage. Apart from the pulling off of a number of boards, the services of the Brigade were not required. Londoners are drinking considerr'blv less beer than they did. but, smoking four times as much tobacco! —according to the latest statistics.; Well, it's the same storv in New!
