SACKED AT CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH. July 27. The dismissal .of a conscientious oblector employed by the Christchurch Tramwav Board was commented on bv the chairman (Mr A. A. McLachlan) who said that the man refused to present himself for military tervice after his appeal had ben dismissed. ' ■ • The man had hardly been dismissed, for when he. was called up, he became a member of;, the armed forces, and could not continue to ho’d a civil iob. It was no concern of the board whether he presented himself for examination or not.. The board could not employ a soldier or an unwilling soldier The dismissal of a member of the Citv Council staff, convicted of an offence under the War Emergency Regulations. was confirmed by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) who said that the employee was a con-cienti-ous objector whose appeal upheld. After his conviction, the man was asked to resign, and, refusing. had been dsms’ed.. ■ Another conscientious -.objector on the council staff .had had his appeal d’smFsod. No action was enntemn’ated a’mffist b : m as long as he did not break the law.
