SNAP ELECTION ?
Mr Menzies’ Tactics VIEWS OF CRITICS. (Rec. 12.48). SYDNEY, July 27. The probability of a Federal General Election is being prominently mentioned by political observers. The United Australia Party has been preparing for a general election for some weeks. Mr. Menzies, Prime Minister, attributes most of his troubles to the lack of the working majority, and his consequent adoption of a'' policy of compromise. Therefore, Mr. Menzies may appeal to the electors to give him either a decisive victory, or a decisive defeat. It is known that Mr. Curtin, Leader of the Labour Party, if an election is inevitable, is anxious to stage it on the budget. It is not likely, however, that Mr. Menzies would al'mv the Labour Party to choose this battleground. He is likely to make the election one on an industrial issue. Mr. Menzies also believes that in an election he would get rid of the threat of his leadership within his Party, as at least two of his critics hold doubtful seats.
