GREYMOUTH COURTS

1940 BUSINESS. A decrease is shown under almost all the headings as compared with 1939 in the annual returns of business transacted in the Greymouth. Magistrate’s and Warden’s Courts. Although only a small decline in revenue was recorded, in the Warden s Court, there was a sharp decline in tire number of applications anq in the number of miner’s rights issued. In the civil division of the Magistrate’s Court, more judgment summouses were issued, but in tne other sections, decreases were shown, the amount recovered In civil actions being £7UB 8s lid less than the previous year. There was a decrease of six in the number of arrests in the criminal division of the Magistrate’s Court, and 129 fewer persons were summonsed. In the number of juveniles summonsed, however, there was an increase of three.

The statistics for 1940 under the various headings, with comparisons with 1939 given in parentheses in each case are as follows:— Wardens Court: —Miners’ rights issues 261 (327). Applications received 189 (221). Minute book applications received 32 (36). Mining licenses granted 97 (148). Registrations 187 (309). Revenue receipts issued 395 (583). Amount received £2,122 2s lid (£2,310 4s 8d). Plaints entered 16 (9). Number of days on which Court sat 29 (25).

Magistrate’s Court (Civil): —Plaints entered 936 (1000). Civil cases heard (defended) 8 (12). Judgment summonses issued 253 (224). Foreign processes received 214 (240). Civil warrants issued 16 (19). Applications heard in chambers 75 (117). Amount sued for £10,557 6s 6d (£14,092 12s 6d). Amount recovered £4,958 16s (£5,694 4s Hd). Sittings presided over by S.M. 33 (28). By Justices of Peace 1" (1). Warrants of distress issued for recovery of lines and maintenance 68 (62). Magistrate’s Court (Criminal):— Siltings before S.M. 75 (62). Sittings before P’s.P., 27 (41). No. of arrests: Males 101 (107); females 1 (1). Males summonsed 591 (705). Females summonsed 15 (30). Children’s Court: Summonsed: 56 males (51); 1 female (3).
