WORKERS’ HOLIDAYS

Australian Policy Decisions by Mr. Justice O’Mara and the Full Court of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court have established the principle of annual leave with pay in the cases of members of the Timber Workers’ Union, the Storemen and Packers’ Union, and the Engine Drivers’ and Firemen’s Union. The extension of the principle of annual leave with pay is in conformity with the statement of Chief Judge Beeby. made some weeks ago, when he said that it was the desire of the Court to extend as far as possible such provisions to all workers. Leave granted annually is seven days, and, according to the awards, may begin at the employers’ discretion within two months from the date when the right to annual leave accrues after a week’s notice to the employee. After six months’ continuous service an employee who leaves or is dismissed through no fault of his own is entitled to payment of onesixth of a week’s wages in respect of each two months of completed continuous service under the new award.
