WANGANUI NATIONAL SAVINGS. WANGANUI, December 12. Mr Webb, in an interview, expressed warm appreciation of the strong measure of co-operation being extended by Wanganui citizens to the national savings campaign. The appeal was launched only a few weeks yet Wanganui had already exceeded the 100 mark in depositors. He was confident that it would not be long before a total of 500 was reached. It was clear that the citizens were out to give the fullest assistance to the great savings crusade, which was playing such an important part in winning the war.

In a brief statement issued to-day, the Dominion Council of Friendly Societies, referring to the recent state? ment made in the House by the Minister of Health, on medical benefits under the Social Security Act, said that this statement was apt to convey the' impression that only tne head of a Friendly Society member’s family received- me 7 )’ 77 '’! benefits. N.Z. INVALIDED SOLDIERS. WELLINGTON, December 12. A minimum of 28 days’ leave, free ticket for one month on the railways, and out-patient medical treatment, are among the grants being made to soldiers returned from overseas, due to sickness or other disability, and being drafted out of the army. WELLINGTON HARBOUR COLLISION. WELLINGTON, December 12. The motor-ship “Breeze” was damaged shortly before 7 a.m. in a collision with The Union .Company’s tug “Terawhiti.” She was turning into the bay between Pipitea and King’s wharves, and was struck bowon, just forward of the engine room. The impact was fairly heavy, and the “Breeze's” side was' bucklted from the rail to the water-line, and probably below. The extent of the damage there cannot be ascertained until the “Breeze” is on the slip, the oil tank making an internal inspection impracticable, but she does not appear to be making water. She will probably go on the slip this afternoon, after the discharge of cargo. The only damage done to the “Terawhiti’’’ was the cutting of a rope fender, which was left on the jagged edge of the “Breeze’s” side, the fender of which was cut in half.

UNPALATABLE WATER! AUCKLAND, December 12. “Water, water, pure water. Come and fill your buckets,” called the town crier, as he rang a bell on a petrol wagon, this afternoon,, distributing Auckland city water gratis to residents of Devonport Borough. The Water Committee of the Borough Council, strengthened by the reception given to a large deputation yesterday by the Minister of Health (Mr Armstrong), decided

upon a fresh water distribution scheme, the Council having passed a resolution, last night, that in view of the unpalatable condition of the

Borough water, arrangements be made forthwith with the City Council for the supply of at least 5000 gallons of water daily for distribution free for drinking and culinary purposes. The operation of the scheme was eagerly awaited by residents.
