WAIUTA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent] • The funeral of the late Mr John Jobling took plac e at Reefton on Saturday afternoon, when a large number of Waiuta residents attended. Many beautiful floral tokens were sent, testifying to the high esteem in which deceased was held. The pallbearers were Messrs D. McPherson, J. Latham, J. Willis and JMcMillan. The services at St. Stephen’s Church and the Suburban Cemetery were conducted by the Rev. D. S. Evans. Mis s Betty McGuinness, who underwent an operation at* the Reefton Hospital some two weeks ago, has returned home, and is making good progress. < • Mr F. W. Marshall, who has been appointed mine manager at Big River, leaves at the end of the week to take up his new position. Mrs Marsliall and family will leave before Xmas. Mr and Mrs Marshall, who 'have been residents here for scm e , time, ’ have taken an active interest in Red Cross and patriotic work, and their many friends wish them success in their new surroundings. Mr T. R. Hogg, who has been visiting Wellington to attend a meeting of th e Board of Examiners, returned on Thursday. , To mark the end of the classes in Home Nursing held under th e auspices of the Waiuta Sub-branch of th e Red Cross Society, a gathering of those interested took place at Mrs C. C. Mosley’s residence on Friday afternoon. After afternoon tea had been served, a presentation was mad e to Mr s D. Douglas,' who had instructed the class. Those present were Mesdames Mosley, Douglas. Marshall, Hogg, Hampton, Robinson,. Misses M. Stephen, R. Harris and F. Nimmo.
The weekly patriotic euchre again drew a good attendance. Mr R. Brown and Mr C. Moorhead were the prize-winners, and a competition was won by Master John Walker. Next Monday will b e the final' night for the aggregate, and also the final until after the holidays. Mr and Mrs M. Bcgoui e left on Monday for Auckland. AtV a general meeting of the Wuiuta the Inangahua Miners’ Union held on Saturday, the president, Mr S. P. Williams, made reference to.the deaths of Mr J. Uren and Mr J. Jobling, whose father and brother were members. A vote o'f sympathy was carried by members standing iir- silence. ■ The matter of the Hom e Guard and th e National Saving Fund was held over till the next meeting.
