CAPE BAN ON NEGOTIATING THEM (Received December 12, 11.20 p.m 1 CAPE TOWN, December 12 There hav e been further restrictions imposed here ‘on the negotiating of British bank-notes. They amount practically to a total ban. excepting at the docks, where notes in the possession of visiting soldiers and of travellers Iwith permits will be exchanged for local currency. Germans have seized a large number of British bank-notes in the occupied territories. • These they are trying to negotiate by shipping them to America, via Lisbon. The banks here consider the ban on British bank-notes is a vital war measure, as the South African Union's wide land borders provide opportunities for smuggling.
