MARKED INCREASE IN ACCOUNTS WELLINGTON, December 12Already the half-million mark has been (passed in the National Savings Campaign. At the close of business on Saturday, the total had reached £567,872—-a ' valuable contribution to th e > Dominion’s war effort Though of the total sum £378,632 comes from the sale of National Sav ings Bonds, th e amount from invest ments in the National Savings Ac counts', £189,240, is moving ahead rapidly in sympathy with'the marked rise in the number of account’ More and rnor e people are recognising the advantages of helping 1h? war effort through the National i”av ings Accounts. The rate of progress is impressive, as these ; figures indicate: Accounts opened during Uralsix weeks, 9,729; opened week endin;' November 30, 7,205; opened week ending December 7, 10,569. • This means that 17,774 accounts wore opened during t.h e past two weeks, as against 9,729 in the first six weeks
Gift coupons present a new aspect of thp movement. Designed to serve a dual purpose—-a Christmas gift and a donation to lh G war effort —the gift coupon s are on sale <at all Post Offices for th e modest sum of five shillings. The couporv is in two parts, one of which is used to open- a National Savings Account or to augment the balance in an existing account.
The remaining part is an attractive reminder of the generosity of the donor and is a permanent souvenir of the part which both giver and receiver have played in this war for freedom.
