RESCUES FROM DROWNING
ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY AWARDS. [Per Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH, December 12. Awards for bravery were granted lo the following persons at a meeting of the Court Directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand today:— CERTIFICATES. Eleanor Jane Wilberfoss, aged 16, of Wanganui, who on February 5, rescued a young girl from drowning in heavy surf at Castlecliff Beach, Wanganui. Jack Dixon Pepper, aged 29, of Hamilton who, on September 27, rescued a man from drowning in a heavy current in,the centre of the Waikato River. Leslie Waters Seager aged 37. of Wellington, who, on October 4, dived into Wellington harbour between a ship and the wharf to rescue a man who had had a heart seizure, and had fallen into the water. BRONZE MEDAL. Charles Lewis Olsen, aged 42, of Auckland, who rescued a man from drowning in Wa’itemata Harbour on August 23. He went out in a boat in very rough water, bent over to seize the man’s coat, and, noticing the man’s teeth were in his throat, drew them out first, expecting every minute that his boat would swamp as the water was coming over. Letter of Commendation:—Thomas McDonald Cushen aged 17, of Invercargill, who, on March 24, dived into a swift flowing river, and, swimming about six yards, rescued a man from drowning.
