High Tides for March: Wednesday, 13 —.23 a.m.; .34 p.m. Thursday, 14—.56 a.m.; 1.9 p.m. Friday, 15 —1.31 a.m.; 1.48 p.m. Saturday, 16 —2.12 a.m.; 2.35 p.m. Shipping: The Rata is due from Wanganui to-morrow to load coal for Nelson and Picton. The Gabriella is in port loading coal for Wellington and is expected to be despatched to-morrow. The Waipahi is now expected from Wellington on Thursday to load coal for return to that port. The Wingatui is expected from Wellington early next week to again load coal for Wellington. Personal: Mrs. McCallum, of Christchurch, is spending a short holiday in Westport. Mr. K. Roberts, of Christchurch, arrived in Westport yesterday on a holiday visit. Mr. D. Gilsennen, Reefton, accompanied by his son and daughter-in-law, were week-end visitors to Westport. Messrs E. M. Phillips and S. .McCallum, who have * been visiting Christchurch, returned to Westport recently. Mrs. H. Gore and daughter, of Sydney, who have been visiting Westport and were guests of Mrs. J. Ryan, Derby Street, left yesterday for Reefton on the first stage of their return trip. Mr. and Mrs. W. Casey, have returned from a holiday visit to Wellington. c Able Seaman K. Connew, of H.M.S. Achilles, was the guest at an evening presided over by Mr. O. L. Nahr, given by the Westport Aero Club, on Saturday evening. The executive committee, other members of the Club and Rear-Admiral E. D. Sydenham, were present, and several toasts were honoured, the guest of the evening giving an interesting resume of his experiences during the battle with the Graf Spee. Mr. W. Lamplough, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Lamplough, of Stratford, formerly of Westport, is paying a visit to friends.

Card Tournament: The usual card parties of the women’s branch of the Labour Party were held on Saturday and also last evening. A meeting of the Holland Memorial Sports’ Committee was held yesterday in the Labour Rooms, when matters in connection with the Centennial Sports Carnival arranged for Easter Monday at the Jockey Club’s course were dealt with.. Mr. H. Stephen occupied the chair and members present were: Messis White, Champion, Adank, Hunter, Absalom, Chandler, Thomas, Swan, Ridsdale, Thompson, Spencer, Hagen, and Woodcock. The Secretary reported that nominations for the chopping and sawing events were coming in freely, but entries from some axemen had been and he would suggest an extension ot the closing date until March 16. The course was agreed to. . Westland Breweries, Ltd., forwarded a donation towards the sports expenses l fund and a contribution' to defray expenses in connection with the visit j of the Pipe Band was received from : Mr. R. Pryde. The donors were accorded a vote of thanks. Mr. Allen, of Charleston advised that he would be prepared to act as handicapper of the second grade chopping . events. The Secretary was authorised to write Messrs Flaherty and Perkins, officials of the Axemen’s Association, asking them to accept nominations for the chopping events. The Hon. P.' C. Webb wrote advising that the National Broadcasting Service would give free publicity to the carnival and he personally would give any help desired in making the gathering a success. Mr. J. Radford, secretary of the Jockey Club, advised j that space could be used on f?Te day lof the sports, at the course, for a merry-go-round. Mr. W. Champion, reporting in connection with his visit to Hokitika, said that he had received several nominations for the axemen’s events and others intimatea their intention of being in Westport on Easter Monday. He discussed with Mr. Hoey, the world’s champion axeman, the possibility of a visit to Westport, and an appearance at the carnival on Easter Monday. It was pointed out by Mr. Champion that the Hokitika Sports Club had brought Mr. Hoey from the North Island and held the full rights of any further appearances on the Coast. However, he discussed the matter with the Club, and he was in a position to announce that the champion would remain on the Coast to allow him delinitely to take part in the axemen’s events at Westport. Mr. Champion, concluding his report, mentioned that the delegates from the Holland Memorial Sports Club were extended every courtesy by the Hokitika committee, and especially by Mr. J. R. Taylor, the President, who went out of his way to see to their comfort. Mr. White supplemented Mr. Champion’s remarks. Messrs Champion and White were, thanked for their report and it was decided to forward a vote of thanks to the Hokitika Club and Mr. Taylor for the many considerations extended to the delegates. On the motion of Mr. Thomas, the names of Mr. M. O’Dea, Jnr., and Mr. L. O’Neill, were added to the committee. The secretary mentioned that Mrs. Marsh and Mr. J. Watson had expressed their willingness to act as judges of the dancing, and in accordance with requirements of the N.Z. National Dancing and Piping Association, he had registered their names with the secretary. It was decided to convene a meeting of the Programme Committee for to-night.

Champion Axeman: As a result of the enterprise of the Holland Memorial Sports Committee, Mr. Denis Hoey, world’s Champion axeman will definitely appear at the Centennial Sports on Easter Monday at the Jockey Club’s course. Mr. Hoey was the outstanding performer at the Centennial contests at Wellington recently. . Mr. Hoey, who weighs 18 stone, and is 37 years of age, won the world title by

defeating Johnston, the previous world champion, three times. Mr. Hoey will arrive in Westport next week.

Wedding: A pretty marriage took place at St. John’s Church on Saturday, when Violet Rosalind, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Coleman, of Seddonville, was wed to George Eric, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Daily, of the Royal Hotel, Westport. The Rev. Corney officiated. The bride was neatly attired in an Air Force blue costume with navy and gold accessories and carried a bouquet of golden dahlias. Mrs. Tiplady a sister of the bride, who acted as matron of honour, wore a navy blue costume with navy and gold trimmings, and cai’ried a bouquet of red roses. Mr. A. Coleman, of Seddonville, was best man. Miss Margaret Tiplady presented the bride with a horseshoe at the Church. After the ceremony the happy icouple were conveyed on the fire engine to Mrs. Mcßride’s tea rooms, where a reception was held and the customary toasts honoured. Mr. J. Daily Junr., acted as Master of Ceremonies. Mr. and Mrs. Daily will reside in Westport.

Bowling: . . The champion pairs’ competition of the Buller Bowling Centre was decided: on the Denniston green on Sunday. Following are the results. First round: Granity R.S.A., represented by J. Easton and J. Pringle (s.), were defeated by Westport, represented byj D. Francis and H. Levy (s.); Seddonville, represented by R. Harden and J. Simpson, beat Denniston, represented by J. Allen and J. Jones (s.) Second round: Westport defeated Seddonville; Denniston defeated Granity. Third round: Westport defeated Denniston, defeated Granity. The Westport pair, by winning all games, are the Buller ’Centre champions . for this season. Yesterday, seven rinks from Westport and the Westport R.S.A. Clubs, visited Granity on Sunday and tried conclusions with the local Club and were defeated by 127 points to 91. The President of the Granity Club welcomed the visitors, and at the conclusion, the President of Westport Club returned thanks on behalf of the visitors, especially mentioning the ladies. Cheers and counter cheers, and one for the ladies, concluded proceedings. The details of play are as follows, Granity being mentioned first: Carmine, G. Tyler, Goodall, J. P. Brown (s.) 18, v.
