PATRIOTIC WORK

COBDEN COMMITTEE. Mr R. T. Roper presided over a meeting of the Cobden Farewell Committee, when a vote of thanks was accorded to Miss M. Kells for her assistance in the chocolate competition. It was decided to farewell the Cobden members of the Second Echelon in the School Gymnasium on Tuesday, March 19. The matter of . arranging music was left to the chairman. Supper arrangements were left to tne lady members of the committee. It was decided to ask the DeputyMayor. Mr 11. Hrring, to make the ■presentations. BRUNNER COMMITTEE. At the meeting of the Brunner Patriotic Society Mrs G. Smith (Taylorville) presided. There, were present: Mesdames P. Moore, E. Ruthex--\ford, R. Fordham, A. Mahon and Miss (Smeaton, Messrs L. Walton, Q. Elder, J. Smeaton and W. Gutberlet. The Westland Provincial Patriotic Council forwarded a report of the Council . meeting which was held in Greymouth, also instructions for the quota of balaclavas from Brunner district land the supply of parcels. It was moved that the arranging for the distributing of wool to the knitters in the district be left to the president ■and secretary, also that a canvas be made in the district early in April for funds for patriotic purposes. It was decided that the Society meet on .the first Monday in the month. A donation of five balaclavas was received from Mrs Quintrell, Dobson. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Mrs Quintrell. It was decided to farewell two members*of the second Echelon who will be returning to the district at an early date on final leave. PAROA SUB-BRANCH. In the Paroa Hall on Monday evening the first of the weekly euchre tournaments was held in aid of the Paroa sub-branch of the Grey Patriotic Society. The winners were Mr J. Sneddon and Miss C. Bruhn. Tea and biscuits concluded a pleasant evening.
