Revealed in Britain (Received September 19, 9.55. p.m.) LONDON, September 19. Typifying a widespread effort to stamp out the profiteering in Britain, a meeting of the Drapers’ Chamber of Commerce strongly denounced profiteering. It is agreed that there is no justification to increase drapery prices above 5 per cent. It was stated in the Chamber that both wholesalers and retailers were exacting rises of from twenty to twenty-five per cent. The “Daily Herald” says: “The meanest type of profiteering- is curring in the Air Raid Precautions’ goods, including the black cloth that is used for the darkening of windows.

British Food Production PRICE AND SALE CONTROL (Received Sept. 20. 12.7 a.m.) LONDON, September 19. Consultations between the National Farmers’ Union and the Minister of Agriculture have begun, in order to ensure close co-operation in the settlement of wartime problems, including the control of sales and of prices, and their bearing on food production. The Minister statpd that the action hitherto taken to fix food prices was provisional in order to stabilise the position pending the Food Ministers assuming control. The future prices would depend on factors that were not yet defined. The farmers could expect that reasonable returns would be guaranteed. The market and prices for crops and livestock would sometimes be supplemented by subsidies, fixed as circumstances dictated.

Lord Tweedsmuir, Governor-Gen-eral of Canada, addressing the Canadian Legion, said he considered the present moment as grave as any in the history of the .Empire. “It is grave, because the war we have entered has a serious purpose, a more momentous purpose than any of the older wars which we fought for security, defence of territory, balance of power, or similar reasons,” he said. “We have entered this war for the preservation of those spiritual values, which alone make life worth living.”

Duke of Windsor TO BE MAJOR-GENERAL ON BRITISH STAFF RUGBY, September 18. The War Office announces that the Duke of Windsor will shortly be proceeding to take up a Staff appointment abroad. In order that His Royal Highness may be able to serve in this capacity, His Majesty has been plea'sed to permit him to relinquish temporarily the rank of Field-Marshal in the British Army and to assume that of Major-General, with effect from September 3.
