STOCKTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. STOCKTON, August 23. Mr T. Pratt, who has resided in the district for the past thirty years, left Stockton on Monday, to take up permanent residence in New Brighton.

The mine continues to work the full ten shifts per fortnight, and there is a report in circulation that an extended back-shift will be commenced in the immediate future. Mesdames Gemmell, Berdinner, Rees, Steele, Fleming and Morgan have returned after visiting Christchurch.

Mr J. Miller and Master R. Ilton left Stockton on Friday on a visit to Christchurch, Mr Miller, who has taken a keen interest in schoolboy football this season, making the journey in the interest of the Buller boys’ team. Master Ilton is one of the four Stockton representatives to gain a place in the Buller eleven. Masters Lavery, Berdinner and Harris did not return from a visit paid to the Christchurch Winter Show, but met the rest of the players in Christchurch. Reports to hand of the Primary Schools’ Competition credit Buller with winning their first and second games in the tourney, each by the margin of one goal. Mr C. Barnes, manager of the team, will be pleased with the results.

Mr J. Carroll, who has been employed by the Stockton Coal Company for the past seventeen years, is severing his connection with the company and is going to commence farming near Birchfield. Mrs J. Bennett and her daughter, Betty, have returned from Christchurch., ' \ } Miss Amy Evans arrived home for term holidays from Nelson Girls’ College on Friday. Masters John and Duncan McGhir travelled from Nelson to Westport by plane on Friday, and arrived in Stockton on the same day to spend the terms holidays with their parents. Miss I. Brownlie is spending a short holiday with Mr and Mrs Gilmour, of Westport. . Miss Batchelor, assistant teacher at the Stockton school, left by plane for Nelson on Saturday. Mrs Oliver, of Nelson, was a visitor to the township on Wednesday. Mr C. Friend, representative of Singer Sewing Machine Company, paid his usual fortnightly visit to Stockton on Monday. Stockton Hockey Club held a cake and candy stall in the Stockton Hal on Friday, and was successful in selling all the goods. Mr P. Struthers, of Westport, w a visitor to the township on Monday. Mr C. Steele received an miury to his leg in the mine last Wednesday and is under the care of the local doct0 Mrs Alf. Harris and Miss Gwe n Harris left on Monday to spend a short holiday with Mr and Mrs Arthur Harris, of Ngakawau. .. ♦ At the Spanish Medical Aid Whist drive on Tuesday evening, Mrs N Morgan won Ist prize and Mr W. Berry 2nd prize. Mr Roy Bennett mej, with an accident to his left hand >n the Millerton mine last Monday. Mr T Parfitt, of Westoort. was <1 recent visitor to the .ownship. Mr T. Berdinner resumed work last week after being on the sick list for a couple of months.
