WAIRAU MASSACRE
Skeleton of Woman TE RAUPARAHA’S DAUGHTER BLENHEIM, May 31. Information given by descendants of Princess Te Ronga, the Maori vvowhose ’death, from a British bullet, led to the Wairau Massacre, makes it practically certain that the skeleton which was found on a spur of Massacre Hill, overlooking the scene of the first clash between Chief Te Rauparaha’s Party and Captain Wakefield’s men. is that of Te Ronga. The natives state that Te Ronga was buried near the spot where she was slain. It had been intended to refnove her body later, for burial, probably in the North Island, but events after the massacre moved too quickly, and the remains were left where they were buried.
