EMPLOYERS’ MOVE

UNITY ON BOTH SIDES. [Per Press Association! CHRISTCHURCH, July 26. A “ONE BIG UNION” movement among the employers in the northern half of the South Island is taking place, The idea is that the Canterbury Employers’ Association should be the parent body, with branches in Marlborough, the West Coast and South Canterbury, and possibly, later on, Nelson as well. There is nothing wrong with the idea, which is a sensible scheme of organisation, but there is a lesson in this movement on the part of the employers for those unions of workers which prefer to “paddle their own canoe.”. . • Under the present industrial legislation special facilities are provided for large organisations of workers and it is gratifying to find that the vast majority of unions realise that in unity is strength. The employers, naturally, are desirous of building up the most efficient organisation within their power, and to have available such information and advice as will be most helpful to them in dealing with industrial problems. The Canterbury Employers’ Association is a live-wire organisation, usually fair' in its dealings with the unions, but a hard fighter, and as it expands and grows in strength the' workers for their part P should see that they do the same. This is an inevitable development of the modern industrial system, and, properly applied on both sides, must be of great value to each of them.
