Dear Mr o’Brien.—With further reHokitika, for a portion ot the Police Reserve there. I have now cel^ d report upon the proposal and c°nsidci it is advisable to agree to thei ex chau-m. I regret very much, there fore,‘that I cannot see my way to meet the’Council’s request. Not only is the Police Department site superior to the Council s site but it covers an area that will permit ot a portion being placed at the disposal of some other Government which mig t in future require a section for but d iU ln view of these facts Ido not feel that the exchange would be With kind regards.—Yours faithful y. GREYMOUTH-WEHEKA STATE ‘ HIGHWAY. 1 PROPOSED IMPROVEMENT AT FORSYTHE ’§ HILL. i Dear S i r —Further to my letter of . the 22nd April last, concerning your representations on behalf of Kamen residents requesting iuiprovements to the highway at Forsythe s Hill, Kam eri I have discussed this matter with the Main Highways Board. The construction of approaches to the .Kamen bridge are so far advanced that no extra material could be utilised if the proposed improvements were undertaken. The improvement a t Forsythe s Hill is quite a desirable work m itself but is in the same category as many othe -desirable improvements on the main highways system. The question as to whether work can be undertaken in this particular locality during the current financial year has been noted and will receive consideration when the- highways estimates arc being framed. —Yours faithfu y, • • Mason, for the Minister of Public Works.

OKARITO-LOOKOUT TRACK. Dear Mr O’Brien.—You will remember that when I was at Hokitika on the 6th February you introduced to me ‘IpSX from the Westl.ud O=»»ty Council who made representations in connection with several -matters, one of them being th e Okanto to Lookout <ta my return to Wellington! duly represented this matter to Hon. Mr Semple, Minister of Works, and I hav e how received a reply from him in which he states that the present track is in poor condition, but rather than insur a large expenditure upon improvements it seems sirable to give consideration to the possibility of locating, a more satis factory route.. My colleague points out that in these circumstances he proposes to defer the question for review during the preparation of the next esti mates when he will be pleased to look into the possibility a* a giant kel °S given from th 0 funds-provided tm Development of Tourist Attractions. With kind regards, your sincerely. (Signed) D. G. Sullivan.

Dear Sir.—l am in receipt ot yom letter of the 11th May m which you urge that consideration be given to the possibility of adopting the railway route as the road line between Mananui and Mahinapua. At the present time it is not possible tor me to let you have a full reply to your request, but as a result of your representations I am making further enquiries and will communicate with you again as soon as I have been able to eive the position close eonsideiation. —Yours faithfully, H. G. R. Mason, for the Minister of Public Works.

MAIN SOUTH ROAD WESTLAND. Dear Sir.- —Further to my letter of the 23rd April, and in reply to your representations in regard, to increased progress of the Main South Road. I have made enquiries, and find that the question of opening up further work in the vicinity of Haast to Jackson s Bay is now engaging .the attention of ithe Department. Careful planning is necessary before engaging in construction activities so far from the base of supplies, and it is with this object .that we ar e now examining the possibilities of constructing a wharf at Jackson’s Bay. It is considered that the river mouths at Haast and Okuru are too uncertain to enble regular shipping contact to be made to. bases at these places. The investigation at Jackson’s Bay is expected to be completed shortly, and when the report is to hand I will advise you further. — Yours faithfully, H. -G. R. Mason, for Minister of Public Works.
