RUGBY FOOTBALL

BULLER MATCHES.

STARS LUCKY TO WIN.

(Our Own Correspondent). WESTPORT, May 3. Only one senior game was played in ■Westport on Saturday, when Stars defeated Rangers (Millerton) by b points to 3 on Victoria Square. The weather conditions were again bad and interfered both with the attendance and the play. Stars were strongly represented, especially in the forward division and were definitely a superior side in the first half but could only achieve a three-point lead. After the changeover the pack went to pieces and Rangers, producing plenty of devil gave the defence a torrid time. The visitors had all the best of the play in the second period and were unlucky not to have emerged from the stiugg e with at least a draw. Th e backs on both sides were in poor shape and as a consequence play was dominated by the forwards. The game revealed little enterprise and from the spectators point of view held little interest. Stai forwards started off in great style and territorially had all the advantage but the backs' showed little cohesion and ma’nv scoring opportunities were lost. J. Hill, playing at centre opened Stars account with a good try which was not improved upon. Early in the seconc half Chippendale equalised for Rangers with a penalty goal. The visit*'? played with ' confidence during the second half and Stars had difficulty in coping with the onslaughts of their fast-moving young forwards. The match looked like ending in a draw, but Wilson with a well directed penalty kick pulled the points out of he fire for Stars. There was no further scoring, Stars luckily winning the match by six tn three.

TIROROA DEFEAT ROVERS. Playing at Granity Tiroroa defeated Rovers by the only 'three points, scored in the match. Play was fast and even and the issue- was always in doubt. Williams, with a penalty goal gave the decision to the visitors.

WESTPORT AND STOCKTON DRAW After suffering a big reverse in their first match this season Stockton on Saturday played a drawn game versus AViestport, both sides scoring three points. F. Powick kicked a penalty goal for the visitors and M. Hill for Stockton, equalised with a similar effort for Stockton..

JUNIOR GRADE. OLD BOYS TOO GOOD FOR RANGERS. Tn the junior competition Old Boys defeated Rangers pointlessly by seven tries and three conversions. Tries for Old Boys were scored by Strachan (3), N.
