LEAGUE FOOTBALL

SATURDAY’S GAMES Marist Beat Pirates BLACKBALL HAVE CLOSE CALL. The first League football games to be played under the new arrangement for Saturday games, were marred by unfavourable weather conditions, heavy showers falling throughout the day and during the games. A small attendance was present at Victoria Park, when Afarist surprised Pirates with a ten-point win, in a game which could not. be classed as goodfootball. Both teams gave a patch; display and lacked combination. On the run of play, Afarist were slightly superior, and their youth told in the closing stages. Blackball had a narrow one.point victory over Ngahere at Ngahere, in a good game. Nelson Creek defaulted to Runanga.

Yesterday’s junior fixtuies wore played in hardly les favourable conditions, Runanga, Marist ano Blackball all scoring comfortable wins. Results were:—■

Searlor Grade: Marist 13 Pirates 3. Blackball 6 Ngahere 5. Runanga won by default

Junior Grade: Marist 15 Brunner 2. Runanga 15 Kumara 9. Blackball 22 Rapahoe 3.

Senior Grade

MARIST 13 PIRATES 3Before a small attendance of the public, Marist and pirates met at Victoria Park. The gifound was in fair order, but several showers during the game made condition^ unpleasant- The game was not marked by any spectacular play, and was ragged throughout, little combination being in evidence on either side- At halt-time, Pirates led by 3 points to nil, but in the second half Marist pitoved the fitter and scored 13 points to gain a comfortable win. Marist, making the' 1 ' local debut, contained seven promoted' juniors, but they lacked leadership in (lie forwardsThe teams were:—

Stewart failed to convert- —Pirates 3; Marist 0- Ryan was offside, but Stewart failed to goal from a handy po rition. Afarist put in n strong attack, but Segu’n was offside in front of the posts. On resuming, Marist attacked strongly, but the forwards lacked thilu c it- Offside p’ay by Stewart gave Beban a good chance, but. h’s k'ck failed to rise- With the ball at their toes, fhe Marist forwards took nlay to Pirates’ line- Malone took the ball from Logie to score a neat try- Ryan’s kick hit the crossbar, but was disallowed—Marist 3; Pirates 3- Shortly afterwards Kiely k'eked through, and Logie failed to handle, Kiely com'ng through to score. Ryan goa'ed—Marist 8; Pirates 3- Inside Marist territory, Casey kicked for the side-line, the ball being stopped by D- Mulqueen, who failed to secure possessionCasey came through and led a rush with Grogan, who scored unde:! the posts. Ryan converted. —Marist 13; Pirates 3- Pirates made desperate efforts to score, but time was called without any alterationBLACKBALL 6 NGAHERE 5.

At Ngahere, Blackball, after being 2—o at half-time, secured a win by 6 pointy to 5. Early in the game, Weir kicked a neat penalty for Ngahere, and in the second spell, A. Gibson scored a try, which wasi unconverted. R. Mountford opened Blackball’s account with a try, Roberts missing the kick. Pascoe fielded a long kick, to send Roberts over for a try, which Clark failed to goal. Mr D. Fajis was referee. NELSON CREEK DEFAULTNelson Creek seniors failed to put in an appearance to play Runanga owing to- some misunderstanding among the players.

Junior Grade

RUNANGA 15 KUMARA 9. On the Runanga Domain yesterday, Kumara were beaten by the home team by 15 points to 9. Hart, Brown and Hickson scored for Runanga, Burns converting each try. For Kumara, Fay, Bell and McGill scored unconverted tries. Mr M. Hall refereed. BLACKBALL 22 RAFAHOE 3. After leading 6 —3 at half-time, Blackball juniors had an easy victory by 22 points to 3 over Rapahoe. For Blackball, Jamieson (2), Mountford (2), Christie and Howdcn scored. Jamieson and Crowley converting one each. Green scored for Rapahoe. Air J. Dodds was the referee.

MARIST 15 BRUNNER 2. (

Playing at Brunner, Marist defeat, ed Brunner by 15 points to 2, after a one-sided game. Ciase (2), Gough, Hopkins and Power scored unconverted tries for the winners, whilst Brun-

tier’s points came from a penalty by Lee. Mr F. Bernard refereed.

Third Grade

RUNANGA 20 BLACKBALL 5Good class football was seen in the third grade fixture between Runanga and Blacffcall, played at Victoria Park- The superior knowledge of the Runanga backs' and the greater we’ght of the forwards we:|e deciding factors, Runanga winning by 20 points to 5, after leading by 17 to nil at half-time- For the w nners, J. Airns scored a try and converted three, G- Clay scored a try and kicked a penalty, while tries wer(e also scored by F- Hart and R- AlaskHl. For Blackball, Naylor scored a try and O’Donnell kicked 1 a penalty.
