Australia won all the awards in the butter, both salted and unsa'ted sections, at the Empire Dairy Show competitions. N.Z. SHEEP INCREASE. WELLINGTON. October 20. For the year ended April 30, 193 G, the number of sheep in the Dominion increased bv considerably more than 1,000.000. At that date there were 16,371,844 sheep in the North Island, representing an increase of 622,828, and 13,741.860 in the South Island, an in crease' of 414,122 for the year. The country with the biggest increase was Rangitikei in the North Island, the increase being 84,269. In the South Island, Ashburton county, with an increase of 65,139 headed the list. Southland, with 1,854,306 sheep at the end of the year, had easily the biggest total. Southland, Hawke’s Bay, Rangitikei, and Ashburton counties all have more than 1,000,000 sheep. The total of sheep owners in the Dominion at the end of the year was 30,590, an increase of 352 and the number of sheep they owned was 30.113,704. an increase of '1.036,950. With the exception of 1930, when there were 30,841,284 sheep in the Dominion, the latest figure is a record since 1917.
