HOKITIKA, June 15

A meeting will be held in the school on Thursday evening, to make arrangements for the holding of next year’s jubilee of the school, Basketball matches played on Wednesday and Saturday resulted as follows:—Koiterangi 13, defeated School A 9; Koiterangi 20. defeated School B 2; Old Girls’ B 10, defeated School B 9; Old Girls’ A 7, defeated Old Girls’ B 2; School A 14, d ef’ eate(l School B 11. This week’s draw is as follows: — Wednesday: Old Girls’. A v. School B, at D.11.5.’ at 3.30 p.m. (Miss Dale): Koiterangi v. Old Girls’ B, at Koiterangi, at 3.15 p.m. (Miss Staniland). Friday: Old Girls A v. Ross, at Ross, at 2.30 p.m. (Mrs Thompson).

The men’s hockey competition, matches were held at the Mental Hospital ground, under adverse conditions during the week-end. Tahua defeated Thistle by 6 goals to 4. For Tahua. Fleming (3), Stapleton (2) and Monk scored, while for Thistle, McHugh (2), Dwan and (Jut bush goaled. The match between Trinity and Kumara ended in a draw, one goal each. For Trinity, J, Smith netted,, and for Kumara, Leather scored. The umpires were: F. Stapleton, R. Day and S’. Fleming. Messrs F. McGregor (president), R. Pedder. W. J. Stafford, E. ,W. Heenan, J. J. Mclntosh, H. Wells and the secictary (Mr M. IL Houston) wore present at the committee meeting of the Westland Trotting Club. The balancesheet for the recent trotting meeting held at Greymouth, showed a profit of £152 17s 3d. lit was decided to hold the annual trotting meeting at Hokitika racecourse on Wednesday December 30th. The club donated one guinea towards a presentafon to the New Zealand president, Mr IT. F. Nicoll, who has left for England. The Doin'nion conference of trotting clubs will be held at Wellington on July Bth, and Mr M. Houston was appointed as delegate. The club resolved to approach Hie Government for an extra day, so that a two-day meeting eould he hold.

Dr. Nola Ivory, of Wellington, a medical miss’onary in India, on furlough is the guest of Mrs IT. Fleming, of Kokatahi.

Her pale pink embroidered tulle veil fell in graceful folds from a coronet of orange blossoms. Her bouquet was of pale pink chrysanthemum.'roses and Scotch heather and ve led with fine maidenhair fern and finished with pink streamers. The bride was attended by her sister. Miss Margate. Phili ps, who was beautifully arraied in a becoming frock of periwinkle blue angel skin crope de chine and diamante clasps holding the cowl neckline in place, the sleeves being finely shirred. She carried a bouqc-t of palo p.nlc and white chrysanthemum's and maidenhair fem. Mr. Geo. Small, of Hokitika ably filled the position of best man. Dator the happy couple left on route for the East Coast, uhet * their honeymoon will be spent. \ popular Ross wedding which took place last week was that of Catherine (Kit) Alexandra McMillian, thiid daughter of AD', and Mrs. TI. MeMullan o f the Empire Hotel. Ross, to William John Monk, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs.. J. Monk, Kokatahi. The Rev L. S. Dewar was tin- officiating clergyman. Mrs. May presided at the organ. The Church was beautifully decorated bv the girl friends of the bride and was •filled to overflowing by the friends of the couple. The. bride who entered the church on the arm of her father, looked charming attired in a robe of pearl satin shirred at the back to form a flowing train and the corsage had cowled neckline. A hand embroidered tulle veil fell 'from a pearl halo and finished on each side with a dainty sprig of orange blossom. She carried'a lovely bouqet of chrysanthemums, begon'as, earnations and maidenhair fern. On leaving the church a lit‘le tot, "Peg” Flaherty, presented the bride with a silver horseshoe. The bride was attended by her sisters. Nancy and Mary, as bridesmaids the former'wearing green and the latter pale p’nk angel skin lace, tight fitting to knees and flat mg at the hem line. The yokes o'f silver lame and silver girdles encircled the waist; and they wore coronets of flowers to tone. They each carried bouquets of chrysanthemums and carnations and maidenhair fem. Mr. Jack Andrews acted in the capacity of best man and Mr. Goo. Monk groomsman. After the cremony at the church, upwards of 150 guests were entertained at the Totara Hall where the usual toasts were prp&sefl and duly honoured. The white wedding cake was a special feature. cd the guests attired in a frock of brown crepe satin relieved with gold lame trimming and hat to tone, and carried a posy of shaded chrysanthemums The bridegroom’s mother wore a becoming frock of blue morotain, also hat to tone. The happy couple left later en route for Christchurch, the bride travelling in a navyblue juniper suit, hat, shoes and coat to tone.i Many valuable presents were received including several cheques, testifying to the popularity of the young couple. Mr and Mrs Monk will make their future home at Kokatahi.

The sum of £5 has been granted by the Hokitika Borough Council to the funds of the Lake Kanieri Scenic Board. Permission was granted to ■Westland Rugby Sub-Union by the Council to levy a fee. of sixpence a head for admission to the grandstand at Cass Square, on Saturdays, in addition to the usual charge at the gates. Reference t'o the wanton desruction of a large length of the Borough water pipe line by an unknown person on May 20 was made at the Council’s monthly mooting. The Foreman (Mr. F. AV.' Chestcrman) said that over twenty pipes were deliberatly destroyed at a time when the reservoir was practically empty. The earth had been removed off the pipes at intervals of about ten feet, and the pipes “stove in” beyond repair. The works staff wore engaged until May 31 repairing the damage, and restoring the water supply from the Lake. Evidently broken t’mber had got into the pipes, causing a blockage which had not yet boon located. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 2ft 4:n. The Mayor congratulated the foreman and his staff on the expeditious manner in which they had affected the repairs, under unpleasant conditions and at a very reasonable cost. A r .ort : on of the pipe line was rolaid at Coal Creek, above the Kanieri Forks, where the new concrete bridge is being constructd, and the relief valve removed back about twenty feet from the edge of the creek, and a galvanisd 4in pipe put in to load the water into the Kanieri Electric water race.

At the Borough Council meeting, the financial statement for May showed that receipts aniountfd to £63,> and expenditure of .€768. There was n debit of .€548 in the district fund accounts. Accounts amounting to £226 were passed for payment. The tender of the "Guardian” Co. for the printing of the ratepayers roll was received? It was decided to grad,, several of the principal streets prior to carrying out surface repairs. The inspectoi was --■ranted an increase of £26 pc-i annum in salary. Cr. Duff stated that no electr’e light had yet been instilled at the abattoir, as was agreed to bo done bv contract. The Council decided to bring the matter before the eontractor, stressing its necessity. 'lhe chairman, Local Government Loans Board, forwarded the Loans Board’s -sanction, dated April 23, 1936, to the Hokitika Borough Council borrow.ng £lB,OOO to renew the water supply pipes, and provide the necessary pumps and pump houses lor pumping water from the bores into the Borough main and reservoir. Mr J. Bergstrom, Marquis of Lome Hotel, made application to run sanitary connection direct into Healey Street drain. Thu application was refused, authority being given to applicant to install a septic tank. Griffin and Smith Ltd. made application for permission to install a septic tank on Section 260, Weld Street.—Approved. Thu Rev Father Fincrty made application for 60 c.p. street, light in front of St. Mary’s Presbytery, and undertaking to pay the Council annually the cost of lighting—Approved. 11. G. Read made application to use the Town Hall for a. danco on Saturday. July 25, as the Poultry Club arc using the Soldiers’ ITall tor their annual show on that night. —Granted. S. G. Newton wrote asking that the road be extended foi between two and throe chains from the corner of Park and Livingstone Streets to give access to residence which he is erecting. — Work to be done. E. Knight wrote asking that frontages to applicant’s and Miss Murdoch’s properties in Sale Streets, be cleared of growth as they wish to make a lawn at the side of the road. —Approved. J. S. Langford wrote asking Council to pipe drain in Sale Street, running parallel with his property to Hampden Street, and offering to contribute £5 towards the cost.— Approved. C. E- Sparkes, sanitary contractor, offered to renew sanitary contract for three years, commencing on August 1, 1936. at a contract price of £440 per annum. The offer was accepted. All Saints* Church Committee wrote asking for the use of Cass Square on Saturday, October 3, for the purpose- of entertaining visitors who will attend the opening of the new Church on November 1. —Granted. N.Z. Refrigerating 1 Co.j advised that the following meat was delivered into Hokitika during April:—l73 sheep. 5 Jambs, 1 cattle, and in May 153 sheep 3 lambs. The following stock was slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs during May:—Cows 26, bullocks 78, heifers 27, iambs 52, calves 32, sheep 29. and pigs llj Condemned: Ono cow. Foes amounted to £73 as against £BB for May, 1935.
