ST. COLUMBA CLUB

JUNIOR BRANCH MEETING. There was an attendance of 25 boys at the annual meeting held in the Club rooms last evening. Apologies were received from the Cleigy. ev. Brothers Oswald, Anthony and Maurice and the secretary of the aomoi club (J. Mcllroy) were in attendance. The president of the Club, Maser James Beban occupied the chair In their addresses the Manst Brothers outlined the various phases oi trie Club’s activity and impressed upon the bovs the benefits to be obtained by attending the various meetings. A review of last year’s work showed a most successful one. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Rev. Bro. Anthony; vice-president, James Beban; secretary, T. Power; treasurer, G. Fairhall; librarian, K. O’Leary. After the election the boys took part in a round table debate, the subject being “That, cheap literature is beneficial to the people. Bro Anthony acted as critic and awarded the affirmative side the verdict of tho contest. The next meeting was set, down for Friday, May 22, when a debate between the members representing the various school houses will be held. The subject will be “That the West Coast is behind the times.’’ It is hoped to have three separate debates in progress on the same night in different rooms. St. Mary’s Club (Hokitika), wrote requesting a debate for the Stuart Cup at an early date. The secretary was instructed to write suggesting a date and to arrange for a suitable subject. The debate will not be held until after the school re-opens. At the conclusion of the meeting a sumptuous supper was partaken of and the boys did it full justice. Besides debating the Club will devote a good deal of time to socials and already an interesting syllabus has been inaugurated towards this end. Judging by the enthusiasm shown, the. coming season should eclipse the success achieved last year.
