CHIEF POSTMASTER
Mr A. I. Flett Retires Air A. I. Flett, Chief Postmaster at Greymouth for the past eighteen months has j ' »ired On superannuation alter 36 years’ service in the Post ami Telegraph Department. During AL’ Flett’s terms as Postmaster both at Westport and at Greymouth he has b<ie n held in high esteem by th e Depari mental olliuei's and tho general public, and his retir -im nt is. therefore, from that point of view, to be* regretted. Air F'lett, whilst i* l Greymouth, look a n active interest in the affairs of thp district, having been a regular attendor at the Chamber of Commerce mootings. Whip* he took n<, active interest i| ( sport, his <-hivf hobby was gardening, and he* was a member of the. Greymouth Horticultural Society. Air Flett joined the Department as a telegraph messenger at Waihi on August 29. 1896. He was promoted to a cadet i u March 19(i(L and was transferred to the Auckland Telegraph Office in April 1963. In September 1904, Air Flett was 1 ransferred as a cadof to Coromandel. He was then transferred back to the Auckland Telegraph Office in 1905, a s a. cadet. In Alarc.h, 1906. h<‘was promoted to telegraphist at Auckland. where h e remained for quite a while. In 1915 he joined th- N.Z. Expeditionary Forces as gunner in the artillery of the Eighth Reinforcements, an<| ros e to the rank of Captain-Ad-jutant in tho first Brigade of th e N.Z. Eield Artilli-ry. Upon resuming duties, in th e Post and Telegraph Department aftoir the war, Mr Flett was appointed Clerk in the Telegraph Superintendent ’s Office in August 1919. following which he was promoted to Postmaster at Waiuku in January 1920. In December of the samCi year he was promoted to Postmaster at Wavcrley. Then in April 1924 Air Flett was promoted to Postmaster at Whakatanc, and in August 1925 was appointed Inspec-tor-Gen e ; ral of Post Offices. Soon afterwards, in December 1926, he was appointed Postmaster af Dcvonport, and in October 1928 promoted to the position of Chief Postmaster at Westport, whoi-a he remained until April 1931, when he was promoted to be Chief Postmaster at Greymouth. whe-e h e has been stationed up till a few days ago, wh? n he, commenced annual leave, prior to his retirement. Air Flett’s successor has no-f; yet been announced. H e will shortly leave, accompanied by Airs Fl-eft and family, for Auckland, where he intends to take up residence.
