LAST SATURDAY’S PLAY. 1 Rivals and Blaketown fought out a I spirited contest on the B. Ground at Victoria Park bast Saturday, whilst Stars and Brunner played a lifeless ! game on the A. Ground, in which in ’the first half Stars scored 20 points Ito Brunner’s nil, and in the second half there was a reverse, Brunner scori ing 14 points to Stars’ 0. I Earthornc scored four good tries for Stars, whilst Mclntosh scored two for { Brunner. This player has come back [ to his own and displayed great form, I playing a dashing game. I The Blakctown-Rival match in the l 1 one-rtund competition, was full of I interest from whistle to whistle. AlI though Rivals fielded a weak team, amongst whom were at least five juniors, they gave Blaketown a hard game. < Houston, the Rival skipper, saved Uiis side repeatedly. The other backs I most noticeable were Stopforth, Pfahilert ami Mason. Hamilton, a junior player who played full-back, did not handle too well, but his kicking was I excellent. j In the Blaketown team there were I two bad links in the backs, and these • ■ were the two wingers, Hannam and ‘Lemin, who mishandled ami played .poorly for the best part of the. game. ' Pascoe, as full-back, was safe, his kicking saving his side on numerous ■ occasions. , n Negri pul in some, good work, and lon defence was excellent. Bunt’s try was a pretty effort and a well-deserved one. This player has the idea of running straight and do [j doubt will be the first considered in that position on that account for rep. i honours. [ Bmilerey. the Blaketown half, is a tiger for toil, and when, or if, the/.(Tvy team intend to put hi a challenge .| fur the Dittman Shield, his inclusion (on his present form must be certain, j 1 as there is no other half, with the exIcept ion of Davidson, who could dis- • place him. it | Webster, one of Blaketown’s big forwards, has shown great improvement of late. He played well on Sat- > ’• urda v. 'l’ll • rest of the forwards were a j fairly even lot and all did their share iof the large amount of work, which i had to be got t hrough. ■! ,! Sumner who hooked in the Nelson ’ I team against West Coast, on their > I recent visit to Nelson, has been trans- ’ £erred Io the Railways Department • at Greymouth. and has thrown in his ! lot with United Seniors. Tte has weight ‘ and is a consistent hooker, and will > jno doubt have a call to be included in the Grey Rep. team to play for the ’lDittman Shield against Hokitika. k l Gilbert, the Buller centre, will prob- > j ably make his appearance in West ’ I Coast Rugby club football, as he has ’ been transferred to the Greymouth ► ’Post Office. H is not yet known which ’ 1 club he will play for. This fine young
(player .who played against the British team for the Combined Buller-Coast I team, will be an asset to West Coast ] next year. ! The question has arisen as to whethler it would be advisable for Greymouth to challenge Hokitika for th-e Dittman Shield, and in most quarters if is • 1 hough! at present that owing to a | number of Excelsior players, who are * residents of Greymouth still playing I for the last named team, that it is best [to hold the matter of a challenge over until a decision in the Excelsior dis- . pute has been reached after “many months” by the. New Zealand Rugby Union. It must be pointed out that the West Coast competition is played between Hokitika and Westland teams, and that as these Grey players arc still playing for a Hokitika team, whilst [residents of Greymouth, there appears ‘to be nothing to stop them from playling in the Dittman Shield game, which {in the opinion of the writer should have eventuated before this time. i : Mr J. F. Wilson, at one time one of the keenent Rugby supporters, and at one time a player on the West Coast, . was a visitor to Greymouth looking up I old acquaintances this week. Mr Wil- ] son was also president of the West Coast Rugby I’nion some. eighteen /years ago. | During the week-end Otira play a reJ turn match at Greymouth with the Grey Loco team. What promises to be an interesting match at Victoria Park to-day is the I senior clash United and Blaketown. JOn the. last occasion two two teams mot the winners of the 1930 championship just scraped home in the concluding stages —8 points to 6. Blaketown have shown improvement of late, whilst United have not shown out a great deal, so that a. good game can be confidently looked forward to. Excelsiors and Brunner on the A. Ground, should provide an interesting game at Victoria Park to-day. j United and Kumara third grade meet on the A. Ground at Victoria Park (and Kumara, and United juniors will I stake another of their interesting I struggles at Kumara.
