ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. WELLINGTON, February 8. The case is being heard in thj Supreme Court, in which Robert Edward Cobb is charged with attempting to obtain £29 from the newspaper “Truth,” by means of a false pretence. The story for the prosecution is thatposing as an American secret service officer, Cobb offered to sell the story of the arrest of one, Quaile, whom ha said he had lodged in the prison eslls at Wellington, and whom he said was an accomplice of Hickman. He also averred he was watching a woman implicated in the Marrickville murder (N.S.W.). Accused says the whole thing was only an escapade, and he did not intend to take the £2O. INTENDED TO MISLEAD COURT. DANNEVIRKE, February 8. Arising from a civil action, James Humphreys, painter and labourer, was committed for trial at the Supreme Court. He was charged with making a statement, knowing i| to be false, and intended to mislead th e Court. Accused alleged that he had made two payments of £5O each in connection with a building contract, and that a friend of his was present when the second £5O was paid. This was denied by th e said friend, who said accused had asked him, prior to the civil action, to swear that he saw accused paying £5O in notes, for which he received a receipt. The friend had declined to do this, as it would have been false.

SHEEP STEALING. AUCKLAND, February 8. The Supreme Court concluded the hearing of the charge of she ep-stealing against Frank James Smith, of Rakau. farmer. Accused having amended his plea of not guilty and admitted the theft of 233 sheep, valued at £351, from Bothwell Station, Glenmurray, between April 11 and December 19 last year. Justice Blair said that accused’s decision was wise. The case was abundantly clear. He complimented Constable Robertson and- Detective Snedden on the manner in which they had handled the case. Accused was remanded for sentence till Wednesday next. STABBED IN STOMACH. MASTERTON, February 8. Owen Llewellyn Udy, 18 years, of Carterton, appeared in Court this morning on >a charge of wounding Albert John Udy in the stomach with a knife. The incident occurred at Carterton last night, the injured man being admitted to the Masterton Hospital. Accused was remanded. WELLINGTON, February 7. The adjourn! 'd hearing of the charge against Udy took place at the Hospital this afternoon. Tfre depositions of Albert John Udy, whose condition is serious, were heard. He said it was an accident. He slipped on the concrete at the back of the door and fell on the knife. He did not sec accused with the knife, and had no vords with him; neither did he strike accused. He was quite good friends with his son.
