INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.

Spreading in U.S.A. WASHINGTON, December 11. The United States Public Health Service 'states that the influenza epidemic, now centred in the Middle West, is spreading eastward, and may sweep the entire nation. Reports from twenty-six States show that 21,238 new cases developed in the wl-"ek ending December 8, and. the officials said this is probably onefifth of the total eases. Deaths so far are n'ot numerous, and the Health authorities, though warning the public to take precautions, said tW.t mortality rate probably would be much lower than during the winter .1918 to 1919. However, several universities and other centres are already closctd. until after the, holidays, due to the outbreak.
