REEFTON NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, December 11. At the Public Service Exam held recently for shorthand and typing. Miss N. Wood senr., and Misses S. Phillips. M. August and May Wood junr. were successful in passing. All four were pupils of the Reefton Convent. Nurse Sloane, of Auckland, who has been spending a holiday with Mrs G. White, Crushington, left for Nelson yesterday to spend the Christmas season with her daughter. Mrs W. A. Hutchings, of Ariki, Murchison. At the Reefton tennis court on Sunday afternoon, Miss T. Phillips was the recipient of a gold wristlet watch from members of the tennis club. Mr P. 11. Fnstone, in making the presentation, regretted her departure from Reefton, a*nd wished her success in her new vocation. Master R. Phillips suitably replied on his sister’s behalf. Mr J. King, of Hokitika, arrived in Reefton on Saturday to spend his annual holiday with his parents. The condition of Mr Herbert Newcombe, who is an inmate of the Reefton public hospital, is causing his relatives much concern. Mr John Harris left for Christchurch by this morni'ng’c express. Myrtle Audubon, a local trotter, is going very well, but is subject to a weak foreleg, upon which it is found necessary to wear a splint. The death took place at the Reeftor Public Hospital this morning at two o’clock, of Mr Richard Blair, at th.’ age of 21 years, son of Mr and Mrs A Blair, of Capleston. Hugh Lewis, owner of a marc and colt found wandering together at largo in Church Street was convicted and fined 5/- and costs 10/-. Cyril Gordon Cairns, Thomas Herbert Lee. and Robert Edward Park, for failing to attend drill of “C” Company, Ist Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Regiment, on October 24, were each convicted and fined 5/- and costs. Five first offenders found on the Southern Cross Hotel, Reefton, during prohibited hours, on November 14, were each convicted and ordered to pay Cour’’ costs. Helen Margaret Smith applied for a maintenance order in respect of a child in the care of the State. — Order was made for payment of 5/- pci week, payable monthly, firyt payment on or before January 8.

At a largely attended and enthusiastic meeting of the congregation of the Wesley it was unanimously decided to ho’d the usual 4‘free-for-all” picnic on Now Year’s Day.
