(By “Original.”) For the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, the weather was perfect, and by the times put up, it will be seen that the track was very fast. Lindberg was the only scratching for the. Melrose Trot, of 14 miles, for which C. S. Donald’s other string, Star Lady, was made a warm favourite, with Lily Bingen and Wakataua the best backed of the others. The favourite began well, while Howdah and Eileen Wood jigged and lost ground at the start. Idol Boy and Star Lady were responsible for the running over the first half of the journey, then Hie former started to drop back, and Star Lady led past the five and four furlongs from Wakataua, the first mile being run in 2.19. Before the home tu n Star Lady and Wakataua led into the straight, and before reaching the distance Star Lady was just in front of Wakataua, but the favourite broke again about 60yds from the post when she was still in front, and Wakataua beat her by a length, while Lily Bingen, when finishing very fast 200 wards from him, bloke and spoilt a royal chance. Times: 3.25, 3.29 1-5, 3.30 3-5. A big commission that vent on Al bena at the last minute caused him to be sent out a good first favourite for the Selma Trot, of one mile, with Pot Locanda <w« Lindberg the best sup ported of the others. The favourite led over the opening stages, then Rogei Lyon rushed to the front and led down the back, across the bottom and into the straight, followed by Albena, Pet Locanda, and Guide Rang!. Before reaching the distance Koger Y®* 1 tired, and in the run home the favourite won very comfortably from Pet Locanda. who with Guide Rangi fought out a stiff battle for second over the last furlong, the former prevailing by four lengths, with Logan Princess close lip fourth, followed by June de Oro and Eiffelton Lass. Howdah and Lindberg failed to move off, and practically took no part in the race. Tinies: 2.16 2-5, 2.15 3-5, 2.15 1-5. ” With the near approach of the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting, W. J. Tomkinson is working his team for there the reverse way, as is also J. J- Kennerley working Petqj Bingen. On Saturday morning a fine work-out was witnessed between Prince Pointer, Young Blake, Elzear, Lingfield and Nelson Boy, the lastnamed going off some lengths behind Tomkinson’s team. Elzear went away two lengths in front of Young Blake, who was followed by Lingfield two lengths furtheraway, JwHile Prince Pointer gave the leader, Elzear, four and two-fifths seconds start. Elzear acted as pilot over the first mile, then Young Blake rushed to the front, and led her and Lingfield to near the mile and a-half post, where Tomkinson, who was driving Prince Pointer, shot to the front well"on the outside. The quartette closed up over the concluding stages, but the black horse easily held the others, and though covering a lot of extra ground, crossed the line in 4.36 2-5; a good showing, as he was fully four sulkies out from the rails the whole way. Young Blake just beat Elzear by half a length, with Lingfield barely one and a-half lengths further away, she going 4.40 4-5. Nelson Boy, who trotted in splendid style, was six lengths further away. Hackthorne, with D. Bennett in the saddle, gave a sterling display over a mile, and off the end at Brighton next Saturday, if he goes away alright, the others will know they have been to the races trying to head him off. Nan Brent gave a good display, as-

sisted by Muriel de Oro, over one and a-half miles. The latter gave her two and a-fifth seconds start, but though Nan Brent was well out all the way, and Muriel de Oro close in, the former beat the latter by three seconds. If she repeats this, as she is off the front next Saturday, in the mile and a-quar-ter, she will also be very hard to head off. Molly Molloy, assisted by Nicola, gave an improved showing over a two mile journey, both trotters going well and making no mistakes. Branidean is working really well, and off 12 next Saturday, if he leaves right, will take a deal of catching. TWO FAMOUS HORSES DESTROYED SYDNEY, December 11. The famous sire Eudorous. and also another good horse of bygone days —• Aurofodina.. were destroyed. The first named, aged 22, broke a leg 5u the paddock ,and the latter, agj d 21 ,was fatally kicked The New Zealander’s Passbook Kilbroingyth, Kilperon, Joybird, and Duke Abbey, arrived to-day, and were safely disembarked, from the Marama.
