REEFTON NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, December 10 Whilst returning from a dance at Ahaura on Friday evening, Mr F. Richards, Rough River, Ikamatua, had a bad spill from a horse he was riding through its stumbling, and he sustained a broken collarbone, besides a nasty shaking. He was brought to Reefton next morning by car and entered the Reefton Hospital where medical aid was rendered. Whilst playing in a tree in the grounds of the State School, Clarence son of Mr C. Coxall, slipped and fell, dislocating the elbow joint. He received medical attention and is progressing favourably. The next sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Reefton takes jdace to-morrow when a good number of cases will be dealt with. Sister R. Raynor, Westport, has commenced duties at the Reefton Public Hospital. Sunshine was the order throughout la-t week, but on Saturday rain set in solidly. Gardens are progressing excellently under the climatic conditions. Mr R. Jones, of the Alexander mine ' arrived in Reefton on Friday. M r W. F. Brett, County Engineer, has returned from a visit to Maruia district. Great work is being done on the road from Springs Junction to the Hot Springs, over 30 men being there engaged. At present it is difficult to, get a car to the springs, but by Christmas time the road will be fit for traffic. Visitors to the Springs will be astonish ed at the work done, and the road, when completed, will be a credit to the district. In addition to selling sheep to advantage of late at Maruia. where half a dozen buyers made purchases at Station Creek, the dairying industry is progressing there, the factory being kept busy. M r G. Wills is starting work on his contract for building a bridge over the Maruia River at Creightons. Sister Sussmilch, of Reefton Hospital, who next week starts a course of training at the Dunedin Karitane Hospital, intends thereafter to attend the Otago University in order to take out her degree. She is recognised as being a very capable and elev er nurse, and her genial personality and exemplary conduct earned her

St Helene Hospital in Wanganui where she took her Maternity and Midwifery certificates. The public here regret the loss to the Hospital of such a competent and valuable nurse, and hope that when her Karitane and University training is over she will return to the Coast and give it the benefit of the extensive knowledge and experience she will have acquired. Messrs M. Henry, D. Wade and J. Crossman. of the Christchurch Training College, returned home on Saturday evening to spend the Christmas holidays. The cricket match, Terrace v. Black* Point, set down for yesterday, did not eventuate owing to the weather conditions. On Friday last a horse and cart belonging to Mr W. O’Grady was left unattended in front of the butter factory. Upon the appearance of a railwav engine, which whistled, the horse suddenly took fright and lt hiked’’ off Mr A. Parkinson, who was nearby in the station yard shunting, set out in pursuit of the frightened animal, which was about two hundred yards ahead. He, however, made up ground, and with a sp ing caught the back of the cart, whch he entered, and returned with the horse and cart to the owner. The banquet under the auspices of the Cronadun Football Club took place at Cronadun on Saturday evening. A

Mr R. Blair, who is an inmate of the Reefton public hospital, attained the age of 21 years yesterday, and was th® recipient of numerous presents. His condition, however, is very serious. Mr F. Richards, who sustained a fractured collar bone on Friday, is progressing satisfactorily. On Saturday night the railway station and nearly residents were suddenly surprised at the inability of the power station to supply the usual necessary light. Upon investigation it was found that the wire had broken. In the meantime all oil lamps in sight at. the station were brought into operation, until the breakage of current wa« mended by Mr Gebbie. The Reefton Cricket Club journeyed to Totara Flat yesterday and played a match there with Totara Flat in the Pratt Cup competition, being successful in running out the winners by 1" runs with but seven wickets down on ihe first innings. Only one innings was played owing to the inclement weather conditions prevailing. Top score for Rpofton was made by W. Blom (IS) Totara Flat put up a good showing c or their first club match, scoring 41. This team, with consistent training. | will be a ha-d team to contend with pn. the near future.
