WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT. December 10. The Cawthron Institute have circulated an account of that institution’s reclamation work on the pakihis, which it is noped may induce some of our citizens to ,give a trial on their own behalf to wliat has been proved, by the experiments already carried out. to be a remunerative occupation. The Buller L.R.C. met on Saturday afternoon, and> transacted a little business left over from the election. Members generally expressed themselves as satisfied with the situation. A wish was expressed that affiliations would endeavour to get accounts fixed up so that the National Office can get their work settled also. It was decided that the next L.R.C. meeting take place on Saturday, February 2nd. 1929, when nominations for national officers if necessary, take place; also nominations for area officer and remits for the Easter Conference must be arranged. On Saturday evening the Muncipal Band played a number of selections on Palmerston Street. It was generally admitted that our Band is progres sing by leaps and bounds. The Westport Business Association have decided upon the following holidays during Christmas and New Year. ).[] have notified the Westland Shop Assistants’ Union accordingly:—On Saturday, December 22nd, shops close at 9 p.m.; on Monday, 24th, close at 1 p.m.; Christmas Day. 25th, close al day; Boxing Day, 26th, close all dly; on Thursday, 27th, close at noon; Mid on Friday, 28th and Saturday, tpth, close at 5.30 p.m.; Monday, 31st ! lose at 9 p.m.; Tuesday, New Year’s (lay. close all day; also Wednesday, January 2nd, close all day. Ths is in lieu of Easter Saturday. Thursday, close at noon; Friday and Saturday close at 5.30. It was also decided that the picnic day should be Monday .January 28th, *1929. In connection with the above, it is anticipated that country shop assistants will be enabled to fall in with the picnic day arrangements, for Monday, January 28th. The substitution of January 2nd fop Easte? Saturday by the employees of Westport was not relished by the shop assistants but they really had no option. The privileges for the publican’s booth at the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting have been secured by Mr R. Hansby, of Sergeant’s Hill, for the re cord price of £145. TECHNICAL SCHOOL SPORTS.
