TORY GOVERNMENTS

BELATED EFFORT To Aid Coal Industry. quarter of a million miners IDLE. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn). LONDON. December 8. The Government has prepared, and IS expected to announce before Christmas, an important scheme for the help of the coal industry, according to the Sunday Express. The public is concerned that a quarter of a million miners are idle, and over a million men, women and children are facing a cheerless Christmas, and are now subscribing hastily to relief funds. The Government plan aims at the creation of a huge selling organisation, as well as providing capital for the development of coal power on scientific lines. The Daily Express says: The Gov ernment’s coal experiment includes the test use of residue from lowtemperature carbonisation. This pro duees smokeless fuel, but in most cases is difficult to burn. Recent research resulted in an invention of a pulverising plant making the residue cheaper for steamship fuel than either coni or oil. In the presence of the Admiralty, Foard of Trade, British. French and Dutch shipping representatives, a successful experiment of the new fuel was carried out aboard the Hororata. She will shortly thoroughly try out the fuel on a voyage to New Zealand.
