RACING AND TROTTING.

Trotting Notes. (By ”Original. ”) There are to-day two trotting events on the Ashburton programme. Thirteen out of the fifteen nominated have been accepted for in the Me’rose Trot, of 11 miles, having a 3.42 limit. Of the nine on the end, Idol Boy, who is now trained by J. Davidson at Addington, has been shaping well in his work. Two raonjhs ago I saw him go 1} miles easily in 3.38. Lindbergh, also off the front, would be a good thing if he would only do in a race what he does in his work. Wrackler v/n the New Zealand Derby Stakes, of 14 miles, in 3.25, Lindberg finishing fourth, and going 3.27, so if he ran up to that form, ho would have 15 seconds to spare—certainly a decent margin.

Whakataua ran two decent races a Methven, but off 48 ho does not 100 l like getting any of the money. June de Oro won at Ashburton earl in the season, and would surely hav been in the money at the Labour Da. meeting at Greymouth, had she no been badly interfered with. She stay

on well. Denver’s Doll, off 84, also goes th distance well, and the big track wi’ not trouble her.

• Wrackler, on 144, is giving a lot away, and as he only beat Lindberg by two seconds in the Derby, and is now giving him 12, he looks to have a fine show of getting beaten. If Lindberg is in the humour he should win. With June de Oro and Wrackler (who is trained on this course) the next best. Eighteen out of the twenty-three originally handicapped have cried content in the Selma Trot, of one mile, with a 2.25 limit, and with half of them off the front. Wallace Logan ran a good race at Motukarara, finishing fourth after losing a lot of ground at the start, and on Tuesday morning went a mile well in 2 16 2-5 secs.

If Lindberg misses a penalty, he also off the end will go a good mile. Of the four on 12, Prologue and Pet Locanda read the best- Auto Minto, Guide Rangi and June de Oro are on 24. Guide Rangi went a stinging good race at Motukarara, just getting beaten by the narrowest margin over a mile and a furlong, run in 2.38 4-5. June de Oro is on 36, but she should be held safe by several of them in front of her.

Great Logan, on 60, won in most pronounced style at Wellington, going the 11 miles in 3.29. As there was a good field behind him, he is not harshly treated on a 2.20 mark.

Wallace Logan, Pct T.ocanda and Great Logan, if wanted, should be adjacent when the line is crossed. Very nice work-outs were witnessed on Thursday morning, first between Logan Park and Prince Pointer, the former getting over two seconds the bert of the start, over a solidly run two miles, and later between Young Blake and E'zear, also over two miles, the showing being of the best on both occasions. Both workouts were done the reverse, or Auckland, way round, pointing to Tomkinson taking a strong team up for the big northern fixture. Hackthorne shaped pleasingly in n solidly-run mile and a-quarter in saddle. Great Ando also worked well in the saddle with Nourmahal, who gave a nippy exhibition in a work-out over two mi’es. which the trotting marc did in good style. Westland Trotting Club. A letter was received from the Railway Department advising that it was intended to run an excursion train to Lake Mahinapua on Sunday, 30th inst,, similar to the train on the Ist January,

holding that such an excursion would assist to entertain visitors while on the West Coast during carnival week. The co-operation of the Racing Clubs was asked to help make the excursion a success.-—lt was decided by the Committee that no action be taken as it was found that few had availed themselves of the opportunity afforded last year. The New Zealand Racing Conference advised the appointment of Mr G. P. McLean, of Amberley, as Stipendiary Steward, and Mr R. G. Black, of Wellington, as Racecourse Inspector, to attend the Greymouth. Club’s forthcoming meeting. The New Zealasd Racing Conference advised that the club were granted exemption from complying with the provisions of Part 6, Rule 8 (clauses B and C) of the Rules of Racing, in connection with the meeting to be held on 29th December and Ist and 2nd January next, •' |W

A painter was at present working on the totalisator roof, and next week would complete the painting of the main stand roof, after which the fences would be given a coat, thus having the buildings and surroundings appearing spick and span. Applications had been received for loose boxes, including enquiries from IT. Nurse for five horses, Pearson for six. and Jennings for throe. Accommodation for the lads was_also required, and it had been satisfactorily arranged with the caretaker that the lads could stay at his cottage.
