WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, November 24. The Labour Victory Ball, held in the Theatre Royal on Friday night, was a pronounced success. The hall was pleasingly festooned, and the supper tables were tastefully decorated, Labour’s colours predominating. Mrs Curtis’s orchestra played excellent dance music, which was much appreciated. Many beautiful toilets were in evidence. Mr J. Spillane acted as M.C.,. and efficiently carried out his duties. During the evening Mr H. E. Holland, M.P.. who was received with vociferous applause, addressing the gathering, said, once again he wished to thank all those who had helped to secure the splendid result. We have now a Ward wave, similar to the Coates wave of last election. The Labour Party were masters of the situation. The Labour Party would not give a vote to keep Mr Coates in office, and the Ward party could only keep in office by making some arrangement witl/ Mr Coates. Mr Coates should' call Parliament together before ’Christmas. No word had come through about Mr Coates’s intentions. Th e Labour Party would still continue as the truly democratic party. It was the only Party which could view the situation dalmly/ He wished again to thank those who had organised such a splendid function, and all those who had lent their aid in achieving the success .attained in the last campaign. Hearty cheers and 1 * He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” followed. The winners of the waltzing competition were Mr Bateson and Mrh Coppersmith, of Denniston, and the runners-up Mr Archie Woodward and Miss Ron a Cressey. The Westport bar is still showing a good depth, there being about 27 feet at high tide. Yesterday the Kaitoke left the port loaded down to 20 feet 6 inches, which is considered most satisfactory. However, there has been some delay in getting the boats away owing to lack of coal. The Kaitoke took 76 working hours to load and the Kainianawa 89 working hours to load. This was caused through waiting for coal.

Mr Horace Marsden has returned to Denniston, after an extended stay in Australia. Mr Marsden, with his water, Miss Olga Marsden, will shortly take over a country business, which has been conducted by Mr Joyee Marsden.

Professor Easterfield, Director of Cawthron Institute, and Mr Rigg, paid a visit to the Sergeant’s Hill experimental plots this afternoon. Miss M. Gilsennan left to-day to taken up a position in the Sunny Side Hospital. Mr W. V. Hanstock is supervising the School of Mines annual examina* tion held at Dennistou. Mr Herb Lane, in the railway workshops at Westport, left to-day on transfer to Petone, and Mr Dick McGreevy is being re transferred to Westport. Miss M. McCubbin, of the Wellington telephone bureau, who has been spending her annual holidays with her parents, Romilly Street, left to-day for Wellington.
