ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
MUTILATED BODY ON BEACH. TTMARU, January 18. The headless and armless body discovered on the beach at Milford, has been identified as that of Mrs W. G. Aspinall, who had been missing since July 21. LITTLE GIRL MISSING. TAUMARUNUI, January 16. Ou Saturday evening a girl, aged six years. Ellis Gray, strayed from her parents’ home-at Mangapehi. A search party was organised within and hour, and searched nearly all night and yesterday without result. The search is being continued to-day. CAR STRIKES TRAIN. PALMERSTON N., January 16. A car driven by Rev. W. S. Tremaine, Anglican minister, Rongotea, was struck by the train at Rongotea— Longburn crossing at one o’clock. He received injuries necessitating his admission to the hospital. The crossing was tho scene of a recent fatal accident, when Guthrie, & butcher, of Longburn, was killed. WOMAN’S TRAGIC END. HAMILTON, January 16. An inquest was held to-day into the circumstances connected with the death of Ethel Kennedy Rochford, 39, mar'ried, who died shortly after admission to the Waikato Hospital on December 31st. Evidence was given by Dr Fulton that, in response to a message from a neighbour, he went to Mrs Rochford, who said her condition had been brought on by herself, consequent on happenings a few months before, while she was in Brown’s Bay on holiday. Dr Fulton said that he had conducted a post-mortem on the body. Death, in his opinion, was due to the use of some strong irritant which caused shock and a gradual failing of the heart’s action, and congestion of the htngs. It was impossible to say whether an ia_ strument had been used. Certainly, in his opinion, some stronger solution than alum had been used.
The doctor expressed the opinion that the irritant had not been self-ap-plied. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with Dr Fulton’s evidence, that death was due to the use of some irritant, causing shock and a gradual failure of the heart’s action, and congestion of the lungs. STRONG SWIMMER DROWNED INVERCARGILL, January 16. While bathing in the Makarewa River on Sunday afternoon, Harry Reynolds, 22, residing at North Makarewa, was drowned. He was a strong swimmer, and it is presumed that he had an attack of cramp. MOTOR CYCLIST’S DEATH. HAMILTON, January 14. . An inquest was opened this morning into the death of Leslie Spencer, who was killed at the Five Cross Roads, Claudelands, on December 19th, in a collision between his motor cycle an*l a car. Evidence of a number of witnesses indicated that Raymond Gifford was apparently travelling at a fast speed. The proceedings were adjourned till Monday.
