HOKITIKA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, January 13. As in other parts of the West Coast, the local community have come to th? conclusion that even in the matter the weather there cau be too much of a good thing, and very many would welcome a good shower of rain at th? present time. The conditions arc very hot and dusty, and the indications f rain during the last two mornings have come to nothing. The tourists, at anyrate, are making the best of the fine weather, and there are at present large numbers travelling to and from the Glaciers. Mr Roy Twyneham, a. Christchurch solicitor, on Monday made an adventurous journey from this side. He set out from the Waiho, and from the head of the Franz Josef Glacier he made a traverse over the Graham Saddle, and from there topped the Minarettes, completing a strenuous trip by a descent of the Tasman Valley and on to the Heocrfltage. Broken ice made fast time impossible, and added a risk that made the journey the more venturesome. In addition to these feats, a number of crossings have been made on the Copeland Pass and the Graham Saddle. Mr Auburn, of Auckland, left The Hermitage on Tuesday to reach the top of Mount Cook, but word has not ’yet been received of him. It is thought that he is temporarily hold up. The lower peak of Mount Cook was reached on Tuesday by Mr Murray, of Wellington, and Guide Williams. The ascent was made from the Hooker Valley, and occupied 16 hours. The two climbers returned to The Hermitage on Wednesday. A scheme of works is proposed for the Borough Council in a motion which Cr D. J. Evans has given notice to move at this evening’s meeting. It provides that the Works Committee include in next street estimates the cost of levelling and forming the full width of Hampden Street, with provision for metalling, to provide on special days for two-way traffic, by limiting up traffic to the left-hand side, and down traffic to the opposite side; also that the Overseer prepare an estimate for next meeting of the cost of tar-sealing the balance of the footways on Cass Square, th? Beautifying Society to assist financially with the work; also that, in view of the increased subsidy to be derived through the petrol tax, the Overseer prepare an estimate of the cost of reconditioning (preparatory to tarsealing) and tar-sealing the main highway through the borough in two separate sections: (a) Fitzherbert Street, (b) Stafford Street; the work also to include widening where considered necessary.

Messrs Butler Bros, the Ruatapu sawmillers, have landed a locomotive of the “F” class for use in connection with the transportation of logs from the bush to their mill. On the bowling green last evening, in a game for the ferns, Messrs Barrow, man and Howard defeated the holders, Messrs Cooke and Lakin, by 26 to 24. Within the next few days some 2000 sheep will be brought from Hari Hari to Ross to be railed to Christchurch for the next Addington market. The funeral of Miss Marcella Agnes McDonald, daughter of Mr and Mrs James McDonald, of Fitzherbert Street, took place to the Hokitika Cemetery yesterday, and was numerously attended. Rev Knowles-Smith conducted the Methodist burial service. There were many floral tributes laid on the grave, denoting that the deceased girl •was hold in high esteem by a wide circle of friends.

The following will represent the Hokitika Cricket Club in their match with Rimu at the Mental Hospital Grounds on Sunday, play commencing nt 11 o’clock sharp: A. Thomas, Sewgt King, R. Ferguson, T. Daly. J. Cooper, W. Keising, R. King, R. Nightingale, J. Turner, J. Coulson and G. Dale. Emergencies: McGavin, P. Dougherty, F. Stapleton*
